I won't say we're overrun, I don't have any on my farm yet, but there are a lot of them in certain areas.  They are closer related to elk than deer, so that should give you a hint on the taste.  Sika are by far the best venison and most guys would trade a dozen whitetails for one sika. 

If anyone gets the NRA hunter magazine, there was an article in there a couple months ago by a guy that came down and hunted sika, very funny but he nailed the experience spot on!

Last year was the first year in a long while I didn't put any venison away. I don't get as much chance to hunt as I would like. Last day of regular gun season yesterday I shot a doe with .40 caliber homemade rifle gun. I was helping another fellow track a deer he had shot with a modern rifle. We never found his deer. While circling looking for his lost trail three does showed up but they turned off the ridge without presenting a shot. I new they would turn back when they crossed our track. Sure enough they came back and crossed the ridge at a run about 60 yards out.

I would have never dreamed that a 40 could do that much penetration on a deer. Was that a pure lead ball?

  Dave absolutely the exit hole. That was obvious. But none the less very impressive...for a round ball..

I have other flintlock options, I have a .45 a .50 and a .62 that have all taken deer, but that little .40 shoots flatter than anything else I own and is lighter to carry. I was reluctant to deer hunt with it, thinking it was too light, but have had good sucess with it. Pure lead as far as I know unless some wheel weight stuff got mixed in maybe. It did punch a pretty good exit hole maybe it flattenend out? That is a 44" Green Mountain swamped barrel with .390 ball and 65 grains fff.

   Different calibers for different deer.   I've noticed in many forums people ash if this caliber or that large enough for deer.   Up here in Mn.   I figure a shootable  whitetail is 120-200lbs + field dressed while many eastern and southern whitetails are much smaller.   Up north I think .45 roundball is the minimum a person can reasonable take deer with and the .50 and .54 much better choices.   I've never used my .45 southern rifle on deer but by the success that many of you are having with the smaller guns I think I might have to try some different loads and give it a shot next fall.

I've killed a lot of deer with the .45 - some quite large and heavy -  and the entrance hole was usually very impressive; normally larger than the exit.  This was even moreso with the .50.  The .45 is minimum in Va/Ga so I've taken deer with .45, .50, .54 and .62 but never with a .40.  My .50 flint is much lighter than my .40 which has   "B" wgt barrel; but the .50 is "B" wgt too.  Go figure.

Got this small 8 point on Nov. 26, 2017, complete pass through and deer ran about 50 yards. Taken with my .54 cal. Isacc Haines I built nearly 20 years ago, .530 round ball, 75 grains 3fg and .015 patch.

I shoot whitetails too fellas!  Got this one on my farm yesterday, 5 1/2 year old buck I've been after for a bit and have a lot of history with.     Probably the biggest 6 point I've ever seen.  Shot with a .58 roundball.

I took this small racked big bodied 8 pt this morning with Samson my Bruton 62 cal. It was a 15 yd shot an it anchored him on the spot

Oh yeah Tim. I have not recovered a ball from a deer yet since I have had this rifle an that was 2013. All have been close shots though, I would say no farther than 60 yds an most under 30. IIRC I have taken 21 deer with it now. Thanks an im looking forward to some tenderloin biscuit from him

Last day of my Minnesota blackpowder season.
She came up over the ridge top i took a stand in..Hooked out front left..stopped behind trees and cover..fed right slowly into a shooting window.. Last Saturday 808 am.
bore down on sights..at the shot she bucked like a mule..

89  yards.. heart shot... pass through.
90 yard death run down hill right.
zero blood or hair at poi and i had snow cover.

58 cal. 570 rb 282 grain
22 thousands tight weave mink oiled patch
105 gr. FF Goex
2F prime.
low peep sight on tang.set trigger.

Steep downhill drag-slide..

Deer grew a  3 inch spike 1 side only.. when i rolled it over..LOL..never saw it at poi.

Its amazing what these deer can take and not leave a blood trail.

roundball entrance right side exit left. shattered right leg bone on entry.

Toboggan slide down to valley floor...Very easy drag out.
