It's a Tulle, Finally!!!!!!

Here are pictures of my Tulle, all 7 pounds of it.  The furniture is hand forged, the stock is scraped, the ramrod is split and the lock is case hardened.  I still need to gray back the lock.  I used some naval jelly on the inside to remove the color but I did not like the results so I will leave it color hardened until I get into town and buy a bottle of blue remover to try.  It will get a couple more coats of oil over the next month before I call it complete.

Nice Gun!!  It will be a joy to carry and use.  You might try cutting back on the case colors by abrading them away with some rotten stone on a patch,  that way you can leave some color in the corners, etc.

Bill,
The barrel is a 44" 16g.  The plan is to take it duck hunting this fall after spending the summer getting loads worked up for it.

  That's Tulle a beautiful gun.  ( I couldn't resist either Rich).

No kidding David, beautifully done. 

I built one from a Track kit a few years ago.  One of my favorite guns to shoot.  Mine's ugly, and has a ring in the 20g barrel.  Let me know how you like the 16g, I just might change it out.

Dave, that is a great job and I have a tad for preferences to the Tulle styles and that stock is an awesome curly walnut.  Very impressive Dave.

Congratulations! Beautiful gun! Clean lines and superb workmanship. I, too, wouldn't be able to eliminate those beautiful case colors, if the gun was mine.

I just went back and re-read your post saying the furniture was hand-forged.  That guard is quite an accomplishment!  Would love to see a tutorial on that.

Looks fantastic David!  It's a great addition to your collection of Rase guns.  You won't regret choosing 16 gauge when it comes to ducks over decoys.  I still hold that it's probably finer finished than the best Tulle musket ever produced for trade in the 18th Century.  And that's a good thing!

Beautiful work, absolutely beautiful. Personally, I like the color cased lock. I would leave it as is.

Taylor,  That's true.  The photos don't really show the scraper work.  Sometimes I made myself come to some sort of compromise between an authentic finish and what is acceptable to today's standards.  If not, and I've been there before, you have to do a lot of explaining about your workmanship.  A few years back at a gun show a guy came by my table that I had not seen in several years.  I had been working hard on my guns to make them more PC verse fantasy, as they had been the last time he saw my work.  The words out of his mouth were, "Where is your good stuff"? :-X
Oh yeah, based on the comments I think I will leave the colors on the lock, at least for the time being.  I am sure through use they will fade out.  Thanks for all the good words.  I accept criticism (constructive) also.

Very nice all the way round, another vote here for the lock as is, I almost wish at times I had went with that barrel instead  of the .58 to reduce weight, again very well done, is that the T in Tulle I can see on the plate below the cock?

It has to be since Tulle did not make trade muskets, it is also one of the nicest seen around here in the 21st century

tg,  If you look closly you will see that the T is the first letter of TVLLE.  Unfortunately, some of the drawbacks to color case hardening, as Jerry Huddleston has mentioned in the past is how it will hide engraving. 

Jerry,  The front sight blade  was installed by tacking an engraving chisel the sam width as the blade and chasing a groove about half the depth of the barrel thickness and then silver soldering it to the barrel.

Dave, the reflected sky and the screamin colors of the blanket are fooling your camera into reading the gun colors falsely.

In other words, your camera setup does not do your gun justice. Try a neutral background, grey, putty, greyish green.

I love that ramrod worm, wowie. Your stock shaping is excellent, such an eye for form has the Race. Likin' the cased lock, too. Won't it just wear and etch and soften with use?
