Maple stock, 15" swamped Rice 40 cal barrel and a Chambers late ketland lock. I made the sights, trigger and hardware.

I really like it. I want to try my hand at a cane-handled pistol similar to the one shown in Dennis' book, page 75. Yours is the first that I have seen that is similar. As others have said, looks like it just came from a 150 year nap in the NC mountains.

thanks , guys. It would be plenty accurate for squirrel huntin. I shot it three times to make sure it worked and the sights were on paper. Im not a good pistol shooter and am sure the gun is capable of much better.

Very nice pistol indeed, Joe. William Ivey has some interesting NC pistols in his book http://www.northcarolinalongrifles.com/. I have most of the parts gathered to build one based on one of them in his book. It's in the build queue.

My copy of his book is in my shop. When I get over there tomorrow I'll grab it and give you the details. I agree, that's one of my favorite books also and I recommend it to anyone interested in NC rifles. As I'm sure you know, the rifle Jim Kibler based his SMR kit on is in there also.

I don't want to run into any copyright problems by coping pictures from William Ivey's book and posting them here. But since you have the book I'll just reference the pictures. The first one I'm building is going to be based on Pistol #9, a Bear Creek School pistol by David Kennedy. I have most of the parts for it including a barrel from Charlie Burton and the stock blank from Dave Rase. The second one will be based on Pistol #14, another Bear Creek School pistol but this one is by Enoch S. Kennedy. I just bought the barrel from Charlie Burton for this one as well. They should be fun projects, but down the road a few months in the build schedule.

Joe, very nice pistol! Is the cane style grip typical of the southern mountain pistols? I have a .40 tapered 10" barrel in a piece of walnut that I want to build to go along with my southern rifle but have never built a pistol. Is the bottom of the grip just a steel plate and is the nose cap open ended? i really like this style of pistol.

Im no pistol expert but i've seen a few mountain pistols with similar grips, some have a little more curve than others. That is just an iron plate on the butt and the nose cap is attached with 3 copper rivets and open in the front.
