white lighting liner
« on: October 09, 2017, 05:05:47 PM »
i'm having a problem with a White Lighting liner, i rebarreled a Pederoli rifle with a Rice barrel, everything worked out fine but i'am having a lot of flash in the pan, is there anything i can do to solve  this problem? i enlarged the flash hole from 3/64 to 4/64, did i forget something?

Did you get into your breechplug with your liner hole? I did on my first build and had to notch the plug. I was much more careful on subsequent builds and positioned the liners slightly in front of the plug.

being this a re barrel on a Pedersoli the flash hole is forward the breech plug about a good 1/8" so i doubt that is my problem. i couldn't help this cause the lock is what it is. the rifle shoots great group wise but a little frustrating when it doesn't fire regularly

 Shoot the rifle, a lot.

I don't know why but just about every new flintlock I have fooled with tend to act up until it settles in. I would try different priming powder, picking etc etc.....full pan, half pan, flint size orientation, frizzen face condition...just shoot it. Most of the time they seem to work in and become less finicky.
So give it some time...learn the new set up....let the new rifle learn you.

No improvement after a few sessions of shooting, maybe you will need to further. First though I would put some ball down range.

Are you wet swabbing between shots? Do you notice a lot of crud when you wipe the bore?

Where is the touchhole located? high or low, forward or back on the pan? A photo would be great if you can do it.

Prime igniting but it's not firing?  That's odd.  When you ram the ball home does air whoosh out the vent?  Can you see powder in the touchhole?

X2.  When freshly loaded, I can ALWAYS see powder at the vent hole.  If not, something is blocking it, for example, a chip of fouling.

Risking a statement of the obvious, be certain the liner does not extend into the barrel, it can snag cleaning patches and cause an ignition problem. These liners are intentionally made longer than needed. Measure or calculate the wall thickness, trim liner to length, install.

The first thing I do after installing a white lightning liner is drill it out to a 1/I 16". These are great liners but the hole as received are a wee bit on the small side for a flinter.
