Western NC/E. TN barrel marked A*G

A friend of mine recently picked up this barrel. It looks like a  western NC/E TN to me. It's 44 inches and about 38 caliber. The tang extension extends on out/over the nose of the stock. The A*G looks familiar to me but I am at our daughter's without access to my books. Anyone recognize the signature?

Almost forgot the barrel has its three original draw loops, front and rear sights and the front sight is silver.

Looks like it's A*G, not A*E.

That barrel is by Alfred Farrington Gross of Sullivan County Tenn.........Louie

Alfred's Gravestone, Piney Tenn. He lived in some interesting times. That barrel is just cool.

My Samuel Kellar rifle has some of the same Masonic emblems as the Alfred Gross rifle that Louie has pictured. It has the man under the crescent, the pointing hand and a few others.

There was no original . The pistol is my attempt of creating what AFG might have made. As far as I know there are no signed pistols by him......LP

You ask if the original pistol was flint.  Robin Hale said Gross never made a flint. But we know now that he did.
I know of two and wondering if there  are more...LP

I have a rifle that I bought off this site this past summer that has an identical tang.  No markings on the barrel that I can find but it's about 46" long and about .38-.40 caliber.  Hearing it may be a carolina rifle based upon the shape of the stock but definitely restock or parts that were restocked.  The trigger gaurd has two hole on the front extension tab and the last stake on the barrel is missing with no hole drilled in the stock for it, either.  Appears to be a hardware store lock.
