I like what you've done. A very nice restoration Gregg, believable, and you did only the minimal needed to show the fowler as it once was before becoming a relic. Obvious thoughtful and careful work with a fine result. That lock is a good fit, obviously the fowler can't be fired, too bad.

What is your estimate on the time you spent on the gun?

I don't usually respond to people's work, but this was obviously a labor of love for you and you really saved the ole girl.  I like everything that you did except for your use of ammonia which weakens brass internally.  Thanks for sharing.  James Levy

Incredible- who'd have thought it could be done?  I sure didn't sand in looking at the first pictures, said to myself - not worth an attempt.

I love seeing restorations! As mentioned by others it's an art in itself, not having a "blank canvas" with your very own boo boos, just to unobtrusively repair the already fine work of another Craftsman and do him justice is a feat.  A feat you sir have accomplished, well done!

Well done!  Now this complete gun will likely be enjoyed by someone long after your time here is exhausted.  Broken guns and pieces are eventually discarded .  You have done all of us and those who come after us who enjoy these things a big favor.  Thank you for your labor and your skill.  Wormey

You have done a creditable job on your restoration.  I have done quite a few restorations and always enjoyed getting to know the original maker as I worked on his product: I am sure you did as well.  There is a fine art in blending new wood with old and making it look like it never happened.   Nice work!

That's remarkable.  I'm in awe of your craftsmanship.  My question is, will you build a bench copy of this fowler to shoot?

Thanks to all for your kind comments!

Dave, I really have no idea how many hours I put into this--I did this at a leisurely pace over several months while working simultaneously on other projects. The wood repairs probably took the equivalent of a few days--I probably spent more time putting together the lock.

James, I'm aware of the weakening effect of ammonia fumes on brass, and I wouldn't have used ammonia on a piece seeing active use, or on a part likely to be stressed. Since this one will probably only hang on a wall, I was less worried. Before using the ammonia fumes, I tried to color those parts using cold blue, brass black, and liver of sulfur gel. None of these resulted in a patina that matched the original brass parts. Only the ammonia fumes came close.

Singlemalt, I doubt that I would make a bench copy of this rather plain export gun--although I like the old gun, it's a little ordinary for my taste. I recently made a  much fancier American fowler, stocked in British style, that I found a lot more interesting. I'd post my pics of this piece from a previous post, but photobucket killed them.

Thanks again to all!

Gregg

Really great job.  Justifying the amount of time to do a project like this is extremely hard if you put a dollar cost on the hours spent.   However the personal satisfaction you must have cannot be measured  in dollars.

I have a couple of nice old rifles in my possession that are in tough shape.   You have inspired me to take another look at them.  If I restore them I will post the project as you did.   Thanks for the inspiration.
