Tang Sight
« on: October 20, 2017, 06:50:37 PM »
Here is a sight that I ran up for my next project. The thread is an 8-64, which elevates at .015" per full turn or .0075" per half turn. Most of this was done with files. Making the spindle to be threaded from 3/16 x 3/4" stock was a lot of slow work. Getting the dovetail to where it was not loose, but not overly tight was also demanding. The top of the sight is only 1/2" diameter as I wanted something small.
The leather washer goes between the locking nut (notice the hand filed knurling) and the tang to act as a lock washer. The small punch is for drifting the lateral adjustment. The aperture is about .090".

Would a cone on the front sight side of your aperture hole give you a sharper sight picture?

The sliding piece that the aperture is in is only 1/16" thick, so there is little practical room for a taper. More importantly when using an aperture, you look through it without focusing on it, allowing your eye to naturally find the center of the light. My clearest point of focus would be the front sight, with the target being less focused.
Still, I would be glad to hear how others opinions.

I'll bet that took some time! Nice work.

Thank you Mike and Hanshi. Yes, it is a time consumer; I figure that I could go into business and sell them as long as I was willing to work for $.75 per hour (kinda like gun making!).

Great looking sight, okieboy.  Taylor was building a similar sight for the pistol-grip Hawken he made

and needed to duplicate the original tang mounted sight.

Bob Roller sent him a tap and die, for 80tpi, iirc.
