Jug Choke?
« on: November 07, 2017, 05:49:59 PM »
Having a discussion with a friend about his DBS being Jug choked and how it is done.
I found a picture in Greener's book pg 261 #4  but they refer to it as recessed.
I understand that the barrel is honed out (material removed) back from the muzzle to create the choke.
He thinks different!    Could someone give me a diagram showing a jug choke barrel?
I tried looking in the archives with no luck
Thanks

The 'end choke' the parallel section to the muzzle after the enlarged part, can vary in length from non-existent as in the modified jug choke below, to much longer, but generally not longer than the shot column.

Standard Jug choke of the 19th century.

Modified Jug Choke - note the lack of an end choke.

Hi,
I did a jug choke for a customer on a Thompson Center New Englander 20 ga.
The choke was .025 X 2". The result was amazing.
#6 shot at 45 yds, gave 20 pellets in a 6" circle. :o
Load was 80 grains 2F 1/8" cardboard wad. 1/8" felt wad soaked with bees wax & olive oil, plastic shot cup wad with 1 1/8 oz. lead shot, and card wad over shot.
I tried it several times and the least count was 20 pellets on a 6" circle.
Needless to say the owner was some pleased.
He even dropped off a fine turkey the following Saturday. ;D
