Brass furniture for RCA No. 79?
« on: July 06, 2020, 12:01:46 AM »
I am looking for a high quality set of brass furniture for rifle No. 79 depicted in RCA Volume I. If anyone has any info I would appreciate it. Also, any thoughts on the patchbox? There is some speculation that it may not have been installed by Haines.

What is considered high quality?

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Soft yellow brass with enough bulk to allow some file work.

I have a beautiful piece of curly maple with tight curl like in RCA 79. The late Mr. Shumway's speculation that that the rifle was built by Haines without a box makes sense to me. I don't like patch boxes, I think they are gaudy and serve a dubious purpose. Why cover up a gorgeous piece of wood. I too am thinking of making an interpretation of RCA 79. If I do I will go along with Mr. Shumway's speculation and omit the box.

If you ever build the rifle I would love to see it. Thanks for your input.

He doesn't have an internet presence. You have to call him on the phone. I don't have any idea of what his # is.  I have no opinion on the PB, I have never had the gun in hand.
