47" 36 cal Burton barrel , maple stock , Chambers lock and davis triggers. I made everything else, except the screws. A very light little rifle, just under 7 lbs.

That's a good looking rifle, well done. I'd like to see some close ups of the parts you made, like the trigger guard, butt plate, side plate, etc.

Sweet little rifle. What did you use for a pattern? Really nice profile.
Still haven't started that little ash rifle. More pressing jobs got in the way.

The color is just store bought aqua fortis. The metal was wiped down with the same aquafortis then steel wooled off after about 24 hours.

Back in the 70's, I used Nitric Acid as a browning solution. It worked very well, was hard on the lungs,

but harder on my fingers. I should have worn gloves.

My fingers throbbed for weeks, then developed a sort of thick-skin syndrome.

I still have a barrel

Im lookin foward to seeing that ash gun, Dane. The profile of this gun was taken from a rifle Wayne owns , then i just build my carolina pattern around that profile.

Daryl, im not sure about the relation to John Shell. From the stories i've read about him he sounds like he could be a relative though 😄
