For all you Pedersoli Bess Fans
« on: December 10, 2017, 06:38:23 AM »
The King's musket shouted again today.  60 yards, 100 grains of 2f Goex, .715 Lyman ball. wrapped in a .015 ticking patch lubed with TOW mink oil.
It was a raking shot. The ball entered behind the ribs,  angling through the one of the lungs then it shattered the offside upper leg bone and exited.  The deer ran maybe a hundred feet and piled up. The impact of the ball sounded like a hammer hitting a board.

I know a local guy that is selling his used Pedersoli Bess. If anyone is interested I can forward his contact info via pm. I have shot his gun and it shot very well. I hit what I was aiming at 80 yards away which pleased me greatly (a smallish steel gong).

Something very cool about shooting a Bess. It felt very... soldier-like. Its a brute of a gun that swallows cupfuls of powder and belches bathtub sized chunks of lead downrange. The flints it uses are huge compared to a slim dainty long rifle. I'd buy his gun but alas, my pockets are currently empty of fun money (sniffle)

The first time I coon fingered a Bess was at Dixie's booth at Friendship.  I was flabbergasted as to the size of the lock, frizzen and flint.  I was used to Siler sized flintlocks.  The size has grown on me to where it is not noticeable anymore.

There’s nothing in the hunting experience like connecting on a whitetail with a flintlock gun.

Thank you all! I couldn't believe how quickly the slow moving ball took this deer. I need to chronograph that load in the spring.  I'll wager it isn't doing a whole lot over 1000 fps.

At over 500 gr. that ball probably won't need a lot of velocity at smooth bore range.  ;D  :)
