Messing around with tin
« on: December 20, 2017, 05:00:17 AM »

Not sure if this is the right place or if these images will load. But I've been playing with tin to keep myself busy and here are the first 2 items I made. Not the prettiest girls at the dance but they're a start. Comments and critiques welcome because I'm just kind of winging it as I go.

Pretty neat. I'd love to see more pics/angles of the lantern, maybe some of it lit.

Here are some images of it lit up. Only now did I see that it seems to say "yay" when lit up from behind.

On a side note, lantern #2 is progessing much faster and better than the 1st one.

This lantern was galvanized sheet metal. It's more accessible but not right for all applications obviously. First one posted for tinplate.

Well done. Very clean and uncluttered looking. How hot does that top ring get, how long before it is too hot to touch?

Brokenock, Not too sure about that question. I cut off the top of the front and rear triangle/roof for vents, but I'm not sure of what or how much that will help. Tough to see in those pictures too, as it hides behind the U-shaped piece.

It's more a prototype than anything else. Plus it's only my 2nd so I'm still just trying to figure out what the heck I'm doing.

Are you soldering the parts together? Keep at it. Try some copper sheet, too.

Yes I'm soldering them, which is a whole other skill that I'm working on.

I've thought about copper too. Haven't done much research on it yet.

Really like your work, Sconces are fun to make as well.

Not sure at what temp the zinc is driven off galvinized material but I did lay sick in a sweat for 48 hours after getting zinc poisoned in a boiler- worth figuring out how to protect your self from it. Maybe not an issue but worth finding out if solder temps create a hazard.

If you can find some .020 steel sheet it is a real nice material to work with, brazed to 1/16ths material you could do some neat stuff. Maybe even brown/blue it.

Small space/small shop projects are great cause you add so much value to the material. A rifle is often worth less then the parts when done but an item crafted from scrap turns pennies into quarters.

Looks like some kids around there are just about old enough to run a hammer and a finishing nail. Glue a design they like to piece of material and I bet it keeps them quiet for at least 20 mins ;D

Thanks for sharing enjoyable to look at.

I looked into the burning the poisons part and it read like I would be ok,  but it's worth looking into more to be safe.

I'm glad you all enjoy seeing them as I enjoy making them. My goal is to make one good enough to donate to my clubs 60th anniversary rendezvous this year.

Not a good idea to be comfortable with flame anywhere near a can designed/marked for an explosive.  Wrong for a pile of reasons.
