Need some advice
« on: December 31, 2017, 07:17:21 PM »
Hey guys. I have an original 13g sxs that I have been using for small game.  Recently I had a day where I shot, and hit, 2 rabbits but did not even slow them down. Using even volume 2f and a mix of 4 &5 shot.  First hit was with a full cushion wad and the second with a half. Both loaded with over powder card and over shot card. Now this same load has taken many squirrels at different distances. So, what gives?

I was told that you can use a juice can to test the penetration of shotgun loads, if your shot won't perforate the can at a given distance, you need to adjust the load. Also test your pattern . You might have holes a rabbit can jump through  ;D

You need to put your load on paper and see what it's doing.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

2 1/4 drams or more should get the job done.   I used this load in a 14 bore for years and it worked on ducks, with a somewhat heavier charge of lead.  (1 1/4 Oz.)
Have a double 19 bore flint, and it liked 2 1/2 drams though, and 1  1/4 Oz .  Worked very well with that load.
Try on paper for pattern, then tin cans.    5 or 6 hits on a bean can at 40 yards would be good.
