Long Rifle For Sale
« on: January 07, 2018, 07:09:42 PM »
Friends -

The following rifle is available locally but I do not know much about it. Can anyone here help point me in the right direction with respect to make/model and approximate value?

Thanks in advance

Foma,

Is this gun yours and you are looking to sell it?  Or you are considering buying it, and would like more info?

Very late gun in not so great condition, probably refinished at some time. Not a lot of value there, probably less than $400, how much less I don't know.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

It looks like mid to late nineteenth century full stock percussion long rifle. It is about as plain as you can find.  With a signature I would guess less than a grand, w/o 250.00.

Copy that. Where could I find the signature? I presume the stock is a replacement too?

On top of the barrel between the rear sight & breech.

I believe the stock is original, but refinished.

I assume that plate behind the trigger guard is a repair for that long crack in the buttstock.

The small lock bolt plate [or washer] is a style most often found on Ohio rifles. The double spurred guard and elongated side-facings where lock sits suggest a mid-century percussion rifle...but the barrel with a large bore and wide rifling grooves looks earlier than the rest of the gun, perhaps a re-use of an older flint era barrel on an 1850-ish percussion gun. The gun has a weakly grained [lower grade] curly maple stock, and has had a lot of cleaning and polishing to brass parts, all hurting its collector value. As mentioned by others, if the barrel has readable maker's name or initials it will add interest and some value. I'd think a $350-$400 estimate is about right due to its condition. Shelby Gallien
