Good Choice?
« on: January 12, 2018, 08:03:35 PM »
As I mentioned in the Cap or Flint thread. I always wanted a nice long rifle in flint. Not to heavy with a swamped barrel and about 38". In .50 for just deer and target shooting. Not barrel heavy so it's easy on my back.

I have a friend that will build it for me, so a kit is what i'm after. Also, a lefty if possible. I came up with an Isaac Haines rifle in a Jim Chambers kit.

What do you think?

I have the Issac Haines in 50 caliber with a swamped barrel.  It is proably one of my best balanced guns for carrying and shooting. Very light weight with the swamped barrel.
It has a 38 inch barrel.
You will not go wrong if that is what you want.
Mine has a wooden patch box and quite a bit of carving on it.
You will like the Issac Haines if its any where close to mine.
Mine does not have a makers mark any where on it. It is very well made. Wish I knew who built the rifle. It has a chambers lock that is top of the line.

That's what I wanted to hear. A well balanced gun is my goal. Yours looks good. I always liked the wooden patch box too. I don't like a lot of flash.

Thank you.

Mine has a single trigger which is very light on the pull.  No creep in it. For a fairly big caliber I don't believe you can find a better balance light rifle.

OldMtnMan,

You will love it.  I have one, 38 inch, .50 cal.  It's my favorite deer rifle and shooting match rifle.  Mine is iron mounted, with double set triggers and I put a little carving on it.  The pictures are when it was almost finished.  The barrel, pins and other parts are much darker now.

Years ago I used one of the Dunlap Lancaster kits to make an Early Jacob Dickert with one of the side opening Brass patch boxes. It was a 38 inch C profile 54 cal. Really handled well.

Personally I would go with a 54 cal instead of a 50 cal. 60 - 70 grains of Goex is plenty for deer and mine had very little little recoil. Plus its lighter to carry due to larger bore.

I would also recommend you get the 54 caliber barrel.

Here we go again.  I have owned 54 and 58 caliber rifles but see no reason for them when hunting anything other than maybe a grizzly.
The Issac Haines with its short swamped barrel is one the lightest rifles I have owned.  Its also one the best feeling rifles when shooting off hand for me.  I would say its about as perfect feeling rifle one could own if like mine.  Mine looks pretty much like KY-Flinters rifle with same hardware.
Everyone their own on caliber that makes them happy.

Good stuff guys. I'll think about the caliber. It will take me awhile to save from my SS check, so time to think about all of it. I'm pretty set on this kit. It comes with Jim's fast lock too. I'll have to decide what barrel maker I want.

Thanks

Local lad up here has a .54 Isaac Haines rifle Taylor built back in the 80's. It's a splendid rifle and would do for about everything in NA.
Len shoots it very well indeed.

A friend has one in 54, great handling and well balanced. I would like one in 58 or 62 with a D weight barrel but don't think Jim makes them in that contour.

Yeah, he has the option to make it smaller, but .50-.54 is standard and nothing bigger.

A friend of mine built Chambers' Isaac Haines rifle in .50 cal in my shop several years ago.  It turned out very nicely ... very light weight and handy in the bush.  Feels like a much shorter rifle than 38" bbl.   I'd call it a perfect deer woods rifle.

Pete,

I looked hard at this kit for my first real flintlock.  I think ideal for you in .54.  (lighter barrel)
Made one for my son in .54 with a 38" barrel, and it feels a Lot shorter and lighter than it is.  (Not a chambers kit though)

I don't think you'll be sorry about your choice.
Richard.

All my flints are 38" 'cept for a .45 which is 36".  Three of the rifles carry swamped barrels and are delightful.  My favorite is a .50 and sort of a "fantasy" rifle.  "B" wgt rb Rice barrel and 12.5 lop.  Very, very light and handy with a 38" tube.  It would be called a "youth's" rifle, I suppose.

Yeah, that LOP would have my thumb up my nose. Jim's kit is 13 3/4" and that should be good for me. Even 14" works, but it's close enough as is. Gives me some room for extra clothing.

Oldtravler,

The barrel's a Colerain C weight in .54 if I remember right.
Have 3 new barrels in the eaves, but .50, .58 and a 16 bore  42" to work on.  Minus 35 last night and hard to keep shop warm.

Beautiful gun. You did a great job building it. I'm impressed with the talent it takes to do it. I wish I had the skill and a shop to do it. I'm a slave to having it done.

Although you did put the lock on the wrong side.  :D
