problems continue...?
« on: January 15, 2018, 06:52:25 PM »
I is still toiling on this pile of parts for my cousin's son that he tried saving money on.  B purchasing a pile of parts that really don't seem to make allot of sense, and worse yet starting to build the gun and doing about everything wrong.
This is a precarve stock with a 7/8" straight barrel.  And a L&R DursEgg Lock.
The master craftsman had already started inletting the lock, so it is where it is.
In finishing the inlet I had to go thru into the RR channel.
I guess I should have thought of this then.
The other day with the RR in the gun I noticed the main spring is actually touching the RR in the channel.
Has anyone experienced this with these lock?S  Is the mainspring really that wide that it goes into the RR channel?
My only remedy as I can see is to thin the main spring some.  It wont take much, but what do ya think.
I would of had two of my own projects finished if I had not taken on this mess.
Thanks to all

Problems are normal.  I would not thin the mainspring.  Seems the ramrod hole is not centered on the bottom flat of the barrel.

It is not unusual for some breakthrough there.  You have to decide how important it is to you to fix it.  Is the end of the rod that goes in the hole tapered some? It should be.

The easiest way to clean this up is to cut a mortise in the bottom flat.  Move the ramrod hole toward the sideplate. Glue in a slat that keeps it pushed over there.  Then glue in a plate of wood forming the bottom flat of the barrel inlet.  It is, of course, half round on the inside to accommodate the ramrod.

Thanks for the ideas.
That is what I had thought, that the RR hole must not be centered, but that spring is awful wide looking.  I will compare it with some other locks.
I would think that the DursEgg lock should work with a straight 7/8" barrel.
A good thing I did not mention is that the inside RR channel is routered and not just drilled, so I can easily access it there, as well as check how of centered it might be.  I had not noticed it being off centered before, but it might be?
Thanks again
