Anyone have closeup images of cheek rest mouldings?
« on: January 15, 2018, 09:31:35 PM »
I'm looking for some good views of cheek rest mouldings.

For example, I have some lines drawn on my cheek rest:

But I am not exactly sure how I want to do the modeling on there. From the photos I have (Rifles of Colonial America and others), I can't completely tell how the side profile of that area looks.

I think I've seen some examples where my lower line would be gouged out in a more rounded / dished line but I can't quite tell.

Do you have some photos of your cheek rests at different angles that you can share?

By the way, this is an Isaac Haines rifle so 1770-1780 era Lancaster County rifle.

Justin, those mouldings  can, and have been done just about every way you can imagine. Go into the virtual library and, look at some old ones , or derive your own . I`ve seen them done many different ways. Someone might have some more helpful advise. Nate         ::) ::)Sorry , your looking for pics

 Just a thought Justin.

Your behind the cheek drawings are very very good but I don't think they flow well. Notice how your drawn in design flows well in front of the cheek. It accents the architecture and contours of the comb and wrist where it flows into the cheek. Although the designs behind the cheek are very good the three C scrolls in my opinion do not flow well behind your cheek piece. The top scroll creeps up into the cheek rest line.
I have yet to carve a rifle but I do have a artistic background. It seems the design may be running off the page a little or at least crowding the edge. Sometimes you will see designs run off the page or run into the cheek rest area but they accent the architecture or fundamental shape rather than crowd or conflict with it.

Notice how the designs of the other rifles flow and accent that area behind the cheek.

Thanks. I was thinking of moving the whole thing further back for those reasons. However, I saw some photos of originals that did the same thing where a few parts of the decorations bumped into the lines of the cheek rest.

However, the majority of the rifles seemed to not do that so I should probably not be lazy and re-draw it.

You're carving is exceptionally well drawn but is flying off in the wind and not connected. Go with something a little more "Lancaster traditional". You have the skills to easily do so.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Mike, this is what I'm attempting to reproduce:

Image removed due to potential copyright issue - Refer to page 332 of Rifles of Colonial America volume 1

I know my left and right C scrolls are further apart but I'm not sure how to get them as close as the original without making one of them look funny.

You're talking to the other MIke :D  but I'll chime in.  I think that looks better,  moving the whole drawing slightly away from the cheek.  also the original in the book doesn't seem to have a defined line coming out of the cheekpiece towards the upper buttplate like yours it's more of a flat area.

Other Mike :)

This Isaac Haines original does:

I'm making a hybrid based on my preference.

I think I'm going to take the tail of that left scroll and make it extend closer to the right scroll... I'll play around with it more this evening.

Looks nice
I think the biggest difference between yours and the original is yours look rounder .
The original seems to be more elliptical not sure if that’s what’s causing the problems with placement

Good discussion. In general we trend toward conservative on this board in terms of copyrighted work being reproduced here. Perhaps in a couple days we will take those posts down as they’ve served their purpose.

yep I see that on the second Hains picture not on the first. I like that line, looks better with it.  In the original the lower right scroll looks a little bigger than the other two.

OK CUT IT! ;D

Maybe tonight... Or tomorrow :P

I cut my moulding last night.

At first I wanted to cut a double line on the top so I used my checkering tool but it is only 14 lines per inch and the parallel lines were way too far apart and made it look goofy. I saved it by scooping out the lower line and turning it into that tapered scoop. *whew*

Rich, I removed the images myself and replaced them with references to the pages in Rifles of Colonial America.

WOW.. I am sure they would not care to put their patent number beside their work so no one will copy it... :o

It's not the rifle, it's the book it was in.
