A lock that would be worth recreating with the stock you have salvaged would be a
Montenyard lock. I am not 100% up on my 20th century US foriegn policy history but the notion I have is that one of the greatest allies y'all  had in S.E asia were hunters who used locally forged side locks. A member on here reported his experience seeing them in the field 50 years ago +/-and had high esteeem for them.

To most eyes they are crude and 'foriegn'- really though they are the ultimate symbol of the fight against socialist oppression. Imagine a friend who you could trust to go up against an SKS toting commie with a monkey gun!

I am optimistic but even so I bet you could make one that would fire reliabley in a weekend.   Be a great first lock and a chance to sort out the working/tempering properties of the salvaged tool steel you got from work.

I am in the process of planning/starting an escopeta which is a short barreled Spanish fowler/musket. This will have a handmade Miquelet lock. I will take pictures along the way and try to figure out this photo downloading business. I have 2 other projects just finishing up so stay tuned and I will do my best. Don't expect my photography to match Curtiss's or Taylors however. If I am not mistaken, Mike Miller has a video on forging a lock, I bet that is very good knowing Mike.

deepcreekdale,  I'm looking forward to seeing your escopeta work.  I was fortunate enough to get to work on a few that were recovered from 1715 Plate Fleet shipwrecks off the coast of Florida before I retired in 2011.  I have one partially done from TRS parts.  James Levy

That is so awesome, that must have been a fantastic experience.  So many people don't realize the extant and impact the Spanish had on our early history, not just in Florida but all over the U.S. You are even more fortunate to have received parts from TRS! Just kidding. You need to finish that project up. The world needs more miquelets.
