Flame Thrower.
« on: January 21, 2018, 10:17:29 PM »
Just on or two  of photos of the 1520's style "Mushroom Lock "  'going off'.  :)

Sarah took these a few days ago.   Her pal was firing it off, as I'd had it loaded since hunting season in November......

If you shoot that thing in the summer you might need a fire extinguisher on hand.  ;D  :)

Oldtravler,  It might be hard on a rag -top if you took a lean over the top of one!

What I don't understand, is the apparent lack of recoil.   This little matchlock is fairly heavy, and the charge was only 75 grs of 2F and a .60 cal ball, but no signs at all of lift.  Not a shoulder stock so you would think it Would show some jump.

Richard.

There is some recoil. It's coming straight back. Not much but can be seen.

Yes, you can fee la nice solid bump when it's fired, just I couldn't see anything on the pictures.
Maybe I wasn't looking right!

It's not easy to notice. I lined up the end of the barrel with the trees in the background. You can also see it if you line up the stock forearm with the car.

  P. B. a friend of mine built a matchlock...69 caliber an never really noticed any recoil when shooting except a small push...very accurate gun..... The lock was very fast. Enjoy yours...!

Wouldn't that be nice? Wouldn't we all shoot big calibers if it wasn't for recoil? Well, the price of powder and lead counts too, but it's mostly recoil for me.

Look at the front sight to the tree line above it, I see 4 ‘lines’ you can reference, a thin line immedaitely above the front sight, a wide darker gray line, then an even wider light gray line and then finally that of the tree line.

The front sight starts out below that thin line in the 1st photo, just getting to the wide darker gray line in the 2nd photo, and through it, but not efen close to the wider gray line in the 3rd photo.

So yeah, it’s moved, but not by much! I credit a good stock design and an arm ‘well cheeked, shot & follow-throughed’ on, myself!

Nice pictures Richard!

All of my muzzleloaders will shoot into one ragged hole ALL DAY LONG ... it's just the 2nd or 3rd & other shots that tend to open up my groups ... !

More time required between the ignition picture and last picture - of just smoke, no flame remaining - then, you would see muzzle climb.

Stock design (and load) is very important, actually quite critical in how much muzzle rise there actually is, of course.

Thanks for the thoughts and comments all.

Flintsmoothie,
I'd forgotten we can click on these pictures and make them bigger!  That really helped to see what you were saying.

Pete,

we should call you "hawkeye".

Daryl,

Thing is, this short little Dudley of a gun doesn't have any stock design!  Just a sort of handle to hold it with, but not like later stocks that fit anywhere.
Mind, I enjoy it so much I can hardly put it down for some reason.   Maybe just the different I don't know.

I'll ask Sarah if she has more pictures after these.

A cheek stock? Because it is held in the hand, it should still rise - if only a bit.

Not a cheek stock either Daryl.
Cheek stocks hadn't been invented yet for a few years.

Corner of chin just touches stock. More or less hold it in your hands and look through the tube at the  front sight.
It does shoot well, and would like to play with it more.

I think Jason, not having fired it before, was "choking" it a bit,...trying to get it to his shoulder.

See the smoke ring forming at the vent? I give brownie points for nice smoke rings at competitions.

Dave,

Two of the pics had the plate blacked out, so I did the other one. I too was wondering why!  LOL!
I'm not always up to speed on things like this,  Figured it was a done thing. (?)   Not that the truck was nicked or anything.  :-)

Brownie points Trent. OK I'm in!

Recoil;
Sarah sent me a wee short movie clip of this, and the barrel does rise to about I/3rd of the way up the trees in the background.
No idea how to attach that though.
