Bill Wright Sheath to Hide Tippit Knife
« on: January 23, 2018, 01:34:04 AM »
Just got this amazing Bill Wright smoked brain tanned knife sheath.  I was going to make a knife to fit it.  But I had one that seems to work well with it for now...tippit

Very nice set!  Looks they were made for each other.

Wow! I wish that you and Mr. Wright would team up and make these available as a set.

I have to agree with g.pennell, they go so well together that it looks like a planned set. Very nice.

The knife and sheath look great together. I am curious about how the pointed ends of the tacks are hidden on the back side of the sheath. I have never handled leatherwork with tacks. I understand their purpose of protecting the stitching from the sharp edge and point of the knife blade, but I have always wondered how the tack points are hidden on the reverse side of the sheath.

The points were not really hidden.
In some cases, the sharp point was clipped and the metal shank peened slightly to hold the tack in place (I've seen examples). In other cases (haven't seen pictures), the metal shank was bent over and the point  driven back into the piece.

rjpalmer,
I appears that Bill bent the pointed ends over with the sharp point into the leather.  He did it very symmetrical without any sharp part exposed to catch anything.  Hope that helps...tippit

Thanks for the explanation of the tack treatment on the reverse side of the knife sheath. The knife and sheath are great together.
