Hi Folks,
This one is nearly done, just needs pins and a stopper, but the light was decent so I shot some photos. Tim Crosby made this one as a kit for me. It is modeled on Page 182 in Jay's book. The tip screws off, and can be used as a funnel for filling when the base finial stopper is unscrewed. Poplar base plug, horn tip. I really like the proportions Tim came up with. I really need to learn how to make these!
I had been wanting to try true "primitive" 18th century images on a horn. Bob Hill kindly provided me with some images of 18th century originals, and I added several to this horn. I love the "cartoon" look of the primitive drawings. I can just visualize a guy sitting around the campfire with his knife point carving away. This horn's surface fought me all the way, being very chip and flake prone. I hope it isn't too embarrassing. There is a doe, a boar, the sun, a heavy horse, a rifleman loading, and a bird that is supposed to be a turkey I guess. It was fun and I tried a different finish method for the scrim that looks more sepia. The colors in the photo at a touch light.....it has some caramel tones in there.
Best wishes and God Bless, Marc
