A new build.... few pics added
« on: January 27, 2018, 04:57:16 AM »
This started as a “Transitional” rifle, but might have morphed into more of a European Hunting Rifle...  I say that because some of the carving and engraving would probably be a little more appropriate on a European piece.  At any rate, the barrel is a Getz, .54 cal, 38”.  The lock is a Chambers round faced Jager.  The trigger guard is the commercially available Edward Marshall (I believe).  I cut out a new pattern on the comb of a Edward Marshall butt piece.  Pipes, muzzle cap, and side plate I made.  Stock came from Wayne Dunlap.  The stock was stained with iron nitrate and finished with Permalyn.  I wish the gentleman I built the rifle for would have wanted a wood box, but he didn’t want one.  Sorry for the poor quality photos, took them near dusk and they got a little washed out.  Think that’s about it, be happy to answer any questions if you have them...

Ed, I like that a lot...I've been thinking of something similar for a project that has features from American and European traditions. Thank you for posting the pictures, your craftsmanship is a pleasure to see and I may "steal" an inspiration or two from your example.

Very sleek looking and looks like it will be a good handling rifle. I would give it a 13 on a one to ten scale.  ;D :)

I love the reshape on the hammer, it makes that great lock look even better.

Beautiful piece!  Have to agree with you and Mr. Hill...deserves a patchbox.

Beautiful work Ed, the theme carries well between the carving and engraving!  I love the sideplate, did you cast that or saw it from sheet brass?

Ed,
Your carving and engraving just keeps getting better.  It all flows together well.  Another great project.

Ed,

I'm real picky about what I like, and I like this one a lot!

Lovely kind of slightly worn appearance really appeals to me. Lovely sideplate. All Very nice!
Yes, a wooden butt trap would have been nice.

PS,

I did not know that Jim was making a round-faces Jeager lock!  When I did mine I altered his round faced English.

Wow, very nice, Ed!  Pukka beat me to it, but I'll repeat:  Love the sideplate, and agree with you that a wood patchbox would make this nice gun even nicer.

Ed,

Fantastic job on the carving !!!  How did you finish the metal and the wood on this one ?

Hi Ed,
Transition gun, I get it.  Really good carving transitioning to really great carving. A wonderful piece. I really like what you did to the "Marshall" guard.

Thanks, all....

Curtis, the side plate was simply cut from sheet brass.

Dave, the barrel was cold blued then rubbed back with a scotch brite pad.  The brass was treated with 44/40, then rubbed back.   The stock was finished with several coats of Permalyn sealer, then rubbed out with paraffin oil and pumice stone, utilizing a tooth brush.

Thanks again!

Absolutely a 13 or 14 on the 1 to 10 scale. It looks so German I can even smell the Kartoffel und Kohl ;D

Ed, I always look forward to your "unveiling" a new one. Everyone has pretty much covered the bases . Not only do you have great artistic skills but, you have the ability to make your works compliment each other, your carving and engraving ,   and not compete with each other , which gives your work a flow that is hard to achieve. I really like the whole thing!!  NICE JOB!!!!    Nate
