Hey Ed,  I showed my wife the tang carving photo, and without missing a beat says, "That's fantastic.  It must be Ed's."   I'd say you have your own signature style going now.  :-)

I see what looks like a pin at the rear comb.  Is that to hold the buttplate return?  Interesting feature.

I really like this rifle, but I must say, you really scrimped and installed one DULL flint.   ;-)

The "shell" carving behind the cheek is fascinating.  I don't recall seeing anything like it, and I really like the composition and execution.  Recently you were mentioning stabbing around the edge to make the carving pop.  You REALLY got this new work to pop.  Pretty sensational.

I like the "beads" going around the breech.  I also appreciate the cross at the back of the tang.  Neat work.

I agree with you on the patchbox.  I can just imagine your shell carving on a wooden lid.  The buyer dictates here though.

I think the buyer needs a horn with some long, undecipherable German words on it.   :-)

He also needs to call and order a fancy bag from James Rogers.

Great job as usual.  God Bless,   Marc

Thanks again, all...

Mark, yes there is a pin holding the butt plate comb in place.  Many English pieces have this feature, as well as American ones.  On a lot of Continental European rifles, the top screw holding the butt piece is placed forward, not at the heel, eliminating the need for a pin.

The shell carving was inspired by a similar design on an original Germanic rifle.  I do, as you noted, typically “outline” carving by stabbing around the design.  Lately, I’ve been going a little further and creating a V shaped “trench” around the design.  This is done either with a V gouge, or by cutting with a skew chisel.  All the carving on this piece was treated in this way.  I unashamedly copied this treatment by studying one of my favorite builders, Allen Martin.

Lovely work as always.   The carving and engraving is real clean and flowing.   I wish I could do as well.

Ed,

Its been a while since I have been able to post a comment; but I had to make the time this time.

Truly a superb piece of work!

I agree that your customer should have opted for a wooden butt-box.  But even without it the rifle is wonderful.

Best Regards,
