Source for Orange Stain
« on: May 12, 2009, 01:06:37 AM »
Recent thread discussed use of bright orange stain and noted Jim Klein was source for the stain.  How do I find Jim Klein and/or the orange stain?

Jerry,
I'm running low and hunting it myself.  I called the new owners of Muzzle loader building supply they were not carrying it.  I guess I'll wait till Friendship and get it from him.  In the mean time, this is an old post from Jim/James regarding the stain.  I haven't seen him post since we made the move from the old board.
Ken

The orange stain as with the rest of our products is available directly from  James Klein [269] 729-4407 791 T drive south , Fulton,Mi. 49052  jim klein

I bought some from him about a month ago. Love it what it does to bring out the wood.

I just talked to Mr. Klein this past Saturday. His orange stain is $4.00 a bottle but the shipping is $4.00. He can ship five bottles for the same price as one. He was more than happy to help me out and talked a long time about staining and other aspects of gun building. I never realized he was into building guns also. I wouldn't hesitate to call him again. :)

If you can use the stain in quart sizes this is great stuff.  Mine was $25 qt.

Have you tried powder stains? I have used a yellow and an orange from
W.D. Lockwood & Co for years. It comes in 1 Oz packs, one of the nice things about it is you can adjust the color.

Thank God!!!!!  I was begining to think I was the only one that mixed their own stain out of powdered stuff and monkey'd with the mix to get the color I want.  ;D

I have previously read threads that mention using orange as a base stain. Does any one have pictures of the orange before following coats are applied? And then pictures of the stock as the subsequent stains are applied?

I have also heard mention of the use of leather dyes. Which leather dyes (brand names) work best?

Here is a stock blank with a progression of stains applied, starting with orange on the left. Then different Laurel MT Forge stains.

Water.  I put it on after rasing the grain a couple of times and sand it back before appling stain.

Check a furniture store for Solarlux, alcohol based.  That's what I've used, about 11 dollars a bottle.  Got some of the yellow from Woodcraft online, but didn't see that they had the orange.  Orded a bottle three months ago through our local woodworkers story and they haven't gotten it yet, so not sure what gives on that front...
