Antler powder measure
« on: February 01, 2018, 06:20:23 AM »
Carved antler powder measure I made last week or the one before. It was inspired by an original. The measure throws 45 grains of fffg and it about 5-1/4" long.

Nicely done...I like it!  Gives me the urge to put some of the smaller tips I’ve saved to use.

That's definitely an "art" powder measure.  Wish I had those skills.

Great job.  I love the folk art images.  I like everything about that one, except it doesn't throw 72 grains and it isn't mine.   ;-)   God Bless,   Marc

Dana, no story with the date. I just thought it looked good when I drew it on. However I could say it was the last birthday my g,g,g,g,great grand dad lived in North Carolina before he moved his family to Kentucky. Can't remember what day his birth day is but he did move to Kentucky sometime in 1811.

Till I read that last post, I thought you must be a slow worker, stating it in 1810 and all.   :-)

No, Very nice job. Looked used and lived in. Just right I'd say.
Very nice design.

I have a few plain antler measures I made that could use some dressing up. How do you go about carving, filing and staining the measure?

Darkhorse I have a modified carving knife that I use on horn and antler for scratching my art. I use rit dye and onion skins for most of my coloring on antler.
