Grobet USA Files

I need some new metal files, and I知 thinking about Grobet USA.  Does anyone have experience with these files?  My understanding is that they are made in India, so I知 a little concerned about quality.

Any other brands that you'd recomend?

They are high quality files, I use them a lot and do not hesitate to recommend them. They have been swiss made for ages, I am not aware of the india connection.

Jose,
I bought a bunch of Grobet Swiss files last year.  I also replaced my needle files with Grobets last year.  Another Grobet file set I bought last year was their escapement files.  The escapement files are in between needle and regular files.

Here is a link to the site that I ordered my files from.  http://www.artcotools.com/grobet-swiss-precision-files/  I used Amazon to buy the escapement file set.

If you have people over to your shop, like I do on Tuesday evenings, you will have to rearrange your tools and announce to everyone that these are your "you can't touch um" tools on this rack.  Learned that after a guest grabbed one of my Auriou rasps and drug it across a buttplate while shaping his stock.

If you need more specifics you can always contact me and I will be happy to help you spend some of your money.

Isn't the numbering system for Swiss files completely different from American files?

IF these "Grobet" files are made in India they may be good.
I bought some end mills from a company in NewYork and
they are from India and are some of the best I have ever used.
One is a 7/8 with 6 flutes I mill Hawken lock plates and others
with and I run it fast and so far it has held up to this abuse and
is still sharp. They have someone in Bombay or wherever that
knows how to grind these tools and are razor sharp like USA
made mills USED TO BE.
Another small end mill I use is a 5/64 2 flute double end for the
"V" cut the "fly" works in.I run it about 4000 RPM in a .075 deep
cut in 1144 Sressproof and finally broke one end. These tiny ones have
to be revved up and do not work well at low speeds.

Rolf,
They were only marked INDIA with no other mark except the size.
I will try to find who I bought them from and post it.

Rolf try here <http://www.toolsavings.com and http://www.wttool.com> . My last order for H.S.S end mills were all India made end mills and like Bob said they were very good. Give them a call and ask.

To the original question...  I致e not been impressed by the Grobet USA files.  Not the same as the classic Swiss Made Grobet tools.

Thanks for the input guys.

Jim - Thanks. The quality of Grobet USA was specifically the question I was wondering about.

I have used Grobet files for many years. They are the very best for what I do. The yare the only ones that make a #8 cut file for engraving use. You cannot go wrong.

FWIW - Don't want to beat a dead horse, but since I hadn't seen these mentioned I thought I'd pass it along -  over the last few years as a lot of my files have started to reach their shelf life (as in reaching a point of diminishing returns when sending them to be resharpened) and I have been testing a lot of different brands including most of those mentioned. Like some who may have commented here, I use files pretty much on a daily basis. Files for highly specialized work aside, in regard to the everyday workhorse files I have found that the Bahco files I've used have been hard to beat. They seem to be a bit easier to find in the USA now than they were a few years ago.
There are also some Vallorbe machinist /engineers files sold by Otto Frei which cut very nicely and are pretty reasonably priced. http://www.ottofrei.com/Machinist-File-Hand-LQ5010-6-Inch . For me the only downside is that the types are limited to basic file shapes and they are only available in 8 and 10 " lengths.  Note that they also have an "economy" version of the same - I don't recommend those.
I took some of these to our gun classes a couple of weeks ago to let the guys try out side by side along with a couple of the brands already mentioned - similar files with same style and spacing of teeth. The ones I mentioned outperformed the others hands down.

That is good to know, Ian.

I've been buying up old new stock files off ebay and picking up old but resharpenable files at the flea market, but have been pretty reluctant to actually use the ones I have not knowing if I will be able to replace them.
