This is a rifle I finished a couple years ago from a blank Jim kibler had for sale just before he came out with his mountain rifle kit. It has a Tulle lock and Rice 54 cal. 38in barrel. I made all the hardware except the triggerguard.

I really like this rifle! The patchbox not going to the butt plate was done nicely. I also like the hinge. I like the little dimples in your lock molding tails. Beautiful trigger and side plate as well. Nice creativity!! I like the whole thing, very cleanly built. NICE JOB!!! Nate

Thanks for all the nice comments. I kinda got out of the box on this one. The lock is not really appropriate. I had planned on reshaping the cock and chisel the plate but the Tulle stamp on the plate was so deep I didn't want to try and file it all out.So I let it go.

Beautiful rifle ! As usual, I am interested in how the wood and metal were finished. Can you explain how you stained and finished the wood so beautifully ? And the metal work ?

Davec2, the stock has about about 5 or 6 coats of vinegar and iron then 2 coats of homemade walnut stain. The finish is artist fast drying linseed oil mixed with about 1/3 true oil. After the pores get filled I lightly steel wool it and put on a thin finish coat. The metal was rust blued then rubbed back with steel wool. I used some cold blue on the light spots. The barrel was just rust blue and washed with soapy water using steel wool.

Little Joe, I need to get a new forge, my hand crank blower gave up the ghost and my wife was not impressed with the looks of her hair dryer when I got finished with it.

Looks good to me. It is more "inspired and adapted" than fantasy in my opinion, though. Even back in the day, people must have decided to go their own way on occasion, otherwise nothing would have ever changed. Not advocating throwing away the rule book, but something different tastefully executed is a refreshing thing every once in a while!
