a parts fusil

I finished this awhile ago.
 A parts gun, only thing I purchased was the wood and barrel. Everything else just a bunch of leftovers.
Maple stock, 50"  .55 caliber barrel by Hoyt
Davis colonial lock
French trim.
Aged, stained with AF
Frontier graffiti

The AF and dark finish on the metal really makes it look authentic. Nice job.

Something about a well built plain rifle....well done!!


What AF did you use? How many coats?  Love the look you got. I'm shooting for something similar on my current build. Nice dark finish with some slightly highlighted wear areas.

I had an older bottle of the TOW stuff. I put 2-3 coats of Formby's Tung oil on. Put on some antiquing agent. In this case flat black spray paint, rubbed back with a thinner rag.. a couple more coats of tung rubbed back with a Scotch Brite pad. AF penetrates deep into work! A few more coats of Tung. Then a couple coats of Brix wax

Thanks for the info!   

I've heard of the black spray paint trick. Just never had it explained. Didn't know at what point it was applied.

        Hi Alex lookin' good.   I suppose you won't bring it back from the next re-enactment you go to.   Used your smoked bacon in a recipe the other day, it was quite good.  I am waiting to see that double anchor lock on a gun....
