I have never had the slightest desire to build a Lehigh rifle, and this just reinforces that.  I do not like the stock style, it is not comfortable to shoot, and it looks odd to me.  Just my opinion.

Lancasters are my favourite. They feel nice on the shoulder, look nice and shoot great. I like the daisy head patchboxes.  I shot that Lehigh with Taylor at Heffley a few years back. 40 cal I think

I always thought Lehighs were funky looking too.  But the more I dug into researching longrifle the more I fell in love with them. Have a plank in my closet planned to be a Lehigh.  I wish the tube was longer at 38"..but a sleek little Lehigh with a 38" tube will probably be a dandy little rifle.


Eventually, I'd like to get to the point where I don't shy away from guns that look too difficult or above my capabilities.   One step at a time....

I don't mind inletting complicated Pboxes if they look good, but the Pbox shown has all those "pickers" which to me would be better left off.....they don't add anything except to make it look "fuzzy". 

A s far as style of LR, that's  subjective and whatever toots your horn is what you should have, but as a hunter, some stock designs aren't all that comfortable to shoot w/ hunting loads. I like the curved buttstocks and my choice was between Lehighs and Bucks Countys and BCs was chosen because of a more comfortable buttstock.

Allen Martin and few other makers of Lehigh style LRs make comfortable shooting Lehighs, but many other builders make "cheek slappers" and I can attest to that because my first and only Lehigh was a pain to shoot.......Fred

Take it to a farrier who knows all about hot shoeing.............   :-)

A very good gunmaker told me when I started. Inletting is inletting! It`s the exact same process to inlet this box as it would be to inlet a simpler one, this one would just take longer. Fancy shapes just take more time, no difference other than that. Piercings do have their own little techniques for a good result. Nate

what are the techniques for piercings?

One technique I’m using more and more is affixing “handles” to things I’m inletting so I can place them in the inlet squarely to check fit then pull straight out without rocking.

Soldering or epoxying appropriately sized brass scraps works well and they are readily removed when done by heating.

I love the curves butts on the Lehighs. I was given a Pedersoli "Kentucky" rifle, .45 cal, percussion a few years back.  It has the curved buttstock, and I found it to be very comfortable to shoot.  Pedersoli rifles generally have 7 rifling grooves, and are pretty accurate.  I went to sight it in, and first shot (100 yd) clipped the 1" bull at 9 o'clock.  Second and third shots made a three-leaf clover - dang good for black powder fired from prone.

John Rupp's work reminds me of Jacob Kuntz stuff.  You shot my rifle and finished the squirrel trail at Heffley a few years ago, and as I recall, you didn't miss a target after you joined me.  That's pretty decent shooting for a guy that doesn't like to shoot Lehigh's!!

Maybe it was just your rifle was the exception. That strong drop takes some getting used to.

When it comes to a rifle that the average person can shoot well, without getting beat up, it is the drop at the comb that to my mind at least, is the most important.  I'll do some measuring on my rifle and post the dimensions.  This rifle has absolutely no cheek slap.
