Another Wood Patchbox
« on: February 15, 2018, 07:56:38 PM »
I didn't want to steal Mauser06's topic, so here is the second PB lid I have made for my latest hunting rifle (like RCA-19). I found the piece of wood I had originally set aside for the pb, AFTER the build was completed! I thought it had a better match to stock than the first one so I went ahead with it. The grain direction was better, but it turned out a little darker than the stock, like the 1st one did. But still better than the first one I think. At least I have a spare if I ever loose it in the woods.
By now you've probably guessed I love wood pb's better than brass 8)

Is that Ash??  Interesting piece of wood.

I'm sure that was fun trying to match!!

Looks like you done good as usual!!

I too think I'm going to make at least one spare lid.

My "issue" is I don't have any wood from my stock..I have a limited scrap pile. I did the best I could...that's why I want to make a 2nd...maybe one will look better than the other.

I really am nervous about what color they turn being acid Staind...the lid might turn red and the stock turns dark brown or vice versa lol. We'll see what happens.  Till I get other wood, it'll do.

They are both nice but I like the shape and carving better on the second one. Thanks for posting.

M06, no this is locally cut black walnut. I got a few choice pieces with some crotch figure. I posted a set of pics about a month ago under title: Transitional Rifle Build-Finished.

I like the second one, the flowing lines seem to fit with the butt stock in my humble opinion.

Tom, you are IMHO a true "Jaegermeister" and a real "Beck'enhoffer" as well! ;D

I like the first one -- the second one looks "fat" to my eye because of the design of the two lines not being parallel to each other -- just my 2 cents :).

I like the first one also, it doesn't look as wide and the carved design looks more German of the early period. Early 1700s

Gotcha! I went back & measured with dial calipers. They are exactly the same width...an optical illusion. 2nd one looks wider to me too. It is 0.100" shorted though, so that causes it to look wider too.

It is supposed to represent an early AMERICAN BUILT rifle using some salvaged Jaeger parts. It's NOT a YAAAEGAH...as Arnold would say 8)
