Question...I’m wondering at what point in time did it become common to have a spring to hold a jackknife blade open/closed?  Also, are there any good reference books available on early pocket knives?  Wheels are turning...

I've read that springs were used as far back as Roman times. I've never seen one that old so I really don't know for sure. I don't know of any books out there that deal with folding knives specifically.

Brian, I like them all!  Was the burl handle hard to turn. I was gonna turn a piece of burly wood some years ago. When I touched the tool to it , it exploded . I still don`t know if all the pieces have landed ;D.  Very nice work!! Nate

I did a Google search and they claim that the first spring pocket knife came about in the early 16 century

Nate, its actually a piece of birdseye maple. It turned really nice with no problems but me. I don't remember what I did now but I looked away or something for a second and took a chunk of wood out of the first one that I made.
