1st Student`s 1st Rifle
« on: March 03, 2018, 03:11:55 AM »
This rifle was built by my 1st. student. He built it about 9 years ago . He has built 8 more rifles \guns since this one. He came by the shop the other night ,and had the rifle with him. It is a .54 caliber 38 inch barrel. The lock and triggers are by Davis. The box lid is elk antler. He has taken deer as well as other game with it , as well as won quite a few shooting matches with it as well. He is starting on a new project, I will post when available. Nate

That looks like an incredible first rifle. I wish I was able to be a student of a master for longer than a week at a time. Thanks for posting.
Wish I enjoyed what makes my living
Did what I do with a willin' hand
Some would run, ah, but that ain't like me
So I just dream and keep on bein' the way I am

Very nice.

Good first rifle. Was that from a blank?

Very nice carving, interesting architecture - not quite sure what school it represents?  I like the patchbox also, is that bone?

Yeah, nice rifle and is that bone?  How's it shoot?

You should be really proud of it.

Thanks everyone for the nice comments. This is a fairly large rifle, with a 14 1\2 inch LOP . He is pretty big fellow at 6` 3" . He did build it from a blank. It wasn't patterned off  of one particular rifle , just an early type rifle. The patch box lid is elk antler. He has built modern customs , since he was young, and has many years experience as a master machinist as well as CNC programmer. Needless to say he already had a good grasp of using tools and , was familiar with longrifles also. It is satisfying to help someone that has the willingness, especially when they end up with good results . Thanks  Nate

Nate thanks for showing. Seen a simular rifle at the Kalamazoo show last year. That rifle had an elk antler patch box lid also. Very different than the norm. Again thanks for showing. Mike

No - not bone. "The box lid is elk antler."

Yes, interesting Jaeger-style wrist indeed.

You're a brave man, I don't have the patience for students.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

No Mike!!  I just don`t have any  better sense !!  Actually , I really do enjoy teaching gun building. Unlike public school , where the students "have" to be there. Gun building students are usually eager to learn. Not to mention the fact , that they usually have invested considerable money as well!  Nate
