Powder horn project
« on: February 25, 2018, 07:48:12 PM »
My grandson and I were busy yesterday and this morning. We made a campaign style horn for a gentleman up in New England. This is part of a craftsman to craftsman trade. It's definitely a change of pace for me, since I'm primarily a gun builder, and have only made a handful of horns. Let's see if I can figure out how to post a picture from this I pad.

Looks well done. Ya gonna leave it natural? What I Really like is that your Grandson was involved.

Beautiful horn...and so thin and transparent!  Great job getting another generation started down the good path. I’m still trying to break the video game curse with mine...

I'm new enough to horn work that I'm hesitant to experiment with something that's going to be someone else's. So I'm leaving it natural. This is only my third horn that I'm happy with. It's nice having a small bit of success with horn work, the stuff i did years ago was pretty horrible.BJH

Great horn, I agree, making the neck black would really make it stand out
to the next level, it's easily done
only flintlocks remain interesting..

I have borrowed Sibleys book, and read through, it a couple times. I should quit being such a cheepskate and buy a copy. The next one has a natural black tip end, so no need for dye. It will be a small horn however. BJH

Folks, these pictures do not do this horn justice. I received it today and the workmanship is excellent. Everything is very clean and well executed, proportions are spot on. Held to the light I will be able to see how much powder I have left, and the translucence makes those rings almost seem to glow in the right light.
The white and carmel colors aren't quite as bright as the picture makes them look, I don't think they will stand out in the shadowy forest, the coloration is quite beautiful.

I will try to take and post some pics from other angles soon.

A few more views/angles, though no pics do it justice,

That won't be the final strap for this horn, I have plans for something nicer that hopefully won't stand out colorwise.
