Gentleman, been busy and gone for awhile but time to start a new build. Having been invited to Allen Coon's farm for his monthly chunk gun matches it's time to build a chunk gun. Starting with a Rice 1"x48"x.50cal match barrel I modified a solid patent breech yesterday and fitted it to the barrel and dressed it down. Modified a l&r late English lock, I have it roughed in and fitting the snail well, time to switch to finer file and bring it the rest of the way in. I also need to stretch and bend the hammer but I will not do that until the lock is inlet. I had a walnut tree that was pushed over on the farm as a result of widening a farm lane. I hated to see it go to waste or be firewood and I was able to get a few nice clear logs out of it. It has been 5 years and the wood is ready to use. As you can see I also got a few pistol blanks also. Probably won't get to barrel inletting until next weekend so that's it for now.

what's the barrel twist, and what kind of sights do you plan on using?

Justin the barrel is 1-66" twist. The front sight is going to be a shaded pin and as for the rear sight I am not certain yet. A lot of choices, I'll just have to see what I come up with when the time comes.

In case you don't know the first chunk gun shoot at Allen's is the hog shoot on March 10th
the next chunk shoot is April 7th so better hurry with that rifle.

Yeah, the shoot schedule is on the refrigerator. Probably won't make the first couple of shoots with my rifle. Allen has graciously offered to loan a rifle. Who knows I may end up shooting my granddad's chunk gun for a bit.

Were any chunk guns ever made with a patent breech? ( excellent workmanship) Have you ever saw a hog bristle used for a pin head front sight? The hog bristle is held close flame and the heat forms a nice pin head. Never had the patience to try it.

I'm also in the process of building one too but a little lighter than yours...will be following this. I have a 1 1/8"x44" Rice match barrel in .45 caliber and I am making it along the lines of a SMR with a Siler mountain percussion lock and Rice set triggers. Iron mounts, of course....Trigger guard and buttplate cast copies by John Anderson from an old original Keller.

I'm really interested in the pin head front sight and the rear to match. Anyone got pictures or maybe a quick "how to make" tutorial?

Little Joe, out of the few chunk guns I have seen they were either flint or a flintlock conversion where the pan was removed and a drum added etc. however I am not even close to an authority on the subject, but I am told that many had a patent breech. No I have never seen a hog bristle.

It's a pin head sight,very fragile and must be used with a hood to protect it.
Sometimes set into a small block of wood.

I have at least 1 hog hair pin head sight. A lot older than I am, if that can be. They are fragile and I'll guess not many survived the rigors of the old chunk matches.

Inletting day, stock blank laid out, going to inlet the barrel today and hopefully cut the ramrod groove. Hope to have you more pictures later today.

98% of inletting done and stock cut to profile. Also a picture of the cutters I use that were reworked and ground for barrels and ramrod groove inletting,leaving a little bit to finish by hand.

Suggestion for the rear sight - used as an aperture sight.
Kind of like this, with straight wall sides to meet rules and a deeper "U" like this capital U in shape.
The front bead is sized to match the rounded bottom, equal distance between bottom and sides.
A small amount of practice would likely be necessary, then it would be just like shooting double apertures.

Many interruptions today but the barrel is in. Guess I'll drill the ramrod hole tomorrow and start inletting the lock.

While maybe not historical correct but in the effort to make the best match rifle I can I decided to bed the entire barrel in acraglass this morning.

I hope for your sake that you put plenty of release agent on! That's a lot of surface area there, let us know how you went getting it out.

Barrel came out fine, only other thing I was able to do yesterday was to inlet the lock plate.

It takes me a few weeks to inlet a barrel. Guess I just need to practice more.

Little more work done, new hammer modified and fitted barrel is pinned and the triggers are in and functioning the lock well. Time for lock bolt, tang bolt and then start on the buttplate.
