How much wood should be left on the top edge of forestock?

 I haven’t built a rifle since 2000 and I’m ready to shape the forestock on a 54 caliber percussion fullstock Ohio style rifle.  Octagon barrel is 15/16” x 42” long.
 How much wood do most of you guys leave on the top edge of the forestock, along the barrel.
 1/32 “ or 1/16 ?  My forestock has 1/8” of wood on both sides of the barrel.

I take the top edge of my forestocks down to a knife edge.

I get it to a knife edge too, and then swipe it once with 400 grit paper so I don't cut myself anymore ;)

The wood  alongside  the bbi is 1/16" thick and terminates in a "knife edge" and the top is quite a bit below bore centerline so the vertical length of the side wood isn't that tall and therefore less fragile.

Justin,

That's why when the rifle is finished, it's best to leave it in the stock.  Plain Scary when it's out.

Rase told me if it doesn't make you pucker to take the barrel out of the stock , it isn't thin enough .

I rough the barrel to 1/16 of an inch while in the rough, then work it down to as thin as possible during final finishing. You pretty much have to keep the barrel in the stock after that, treat the stock like crystal glass when the barrel is out after final finish. I find a long piece of rod, similar to the ramrod drill in the ramrod channel helps reinforce the stock while working on it.

Does anyone else file a slight (2degrees) draft angle on the bottom half of the side flats on your barrel?
When I was a design engineer EVERY part had to have draft angle designed & built into it for assembly & disassembly, whether it was cast or forged. Makes sense so the barrel pulls out without taking strips of wood with it.

No, I don't... yet.  Had never even thought of such a simple, practical solution.

All it takes is a few swipes on the corner of the flat with a file and the barrel won't stick.
