London View and Proof Stamps
« on: March 03, 2018, 09:14:28 PM »
After revisiting some old links/favorites, I've noted with dismay that Chris Altland has passed. I've also tried to email Mr. Filipski, without any success. Does anyone know if the London view and proof stamps that Mr. Altland offered may be available? Alternatively, does anyone have a set of the two stamps that they may be willing to sell?

FWIW,

If you were in the UK, you'd get your hands chopped off for using them.   It is well you are in the Land of the Free. :-)
No jest, you would get locked up.

Richard.

That's simply atrocious. No room in English law for the stamp application in the furtherance of historical accuracy?

AJ, do you know if the Track stamps will result in the V and GP being stamped INTO the barrel, as opposed to being stamped in relief? That's why I had intended to purchase Mr. Altland's stamps: the letters were left in relief. And thanks for the tip!

JM,
You can apply any stamp you wish, As Long (very important!) It does not look like a copy of the London proof and view marks.
They are still valid and you Will be charged for  using forgeries.

Mind, I think they feed prisoners better than us on the outside, so maybe not so bad!

Heh. I do believe that if you were in England, you'd have to get it proofed anyway, and they'd apply whatever the current stamps are. Stamping it yourself would be forging safety inspection signatures.

Historical accuracy has nothing to do with it - they are interested in ensuring that it won't blow up on your customer, same as in the 18th century.

I guess I can understand the prohibition, if the stamps are still used (or a close approximation thereof).

Anyway, do the Track of the Wolf products stamp the letters into the barrel, or are the letters left in relief? And thanks for all the comments!

Jmaurer,
Chris had those stamps made by Buckeye Engraving. The ones he sold were appropriate for the London Gunmakers Co.
You can get anything you want made by Buckeye. You might prefer private proofs like a crown over v and crown over p.
Contact Sean Broadbent at Buckeye.

A couple of years ago I made a fowler intended to represent an American-made fowler stocked in the British fashion. I put two private Tower stamps on the left upper rear flat near the breech (crown over crossed scepters, no V or P), to represent a British imported barrel. (I got this single Tower stamp from TOW.) I have photos of original American stocked fowlers (or at least one) having these stamps. When I posted pictures of my fowler here, I was taken to task by one of the British members of this forum, gently suggesting it represented forgery, malfeasance, or other chicanery, worthy of legal action (especially if perpetrated in the UK). This combination of stamps has not been used since 1813! Is this really an issue?
In any case I'll be careful not to get caught in the UK with this gun, though out of curiously I wouldn't mind sampling British prison fare. But not for long.

Gregg

I used the Proof and View stamps from TOW on this blunderbuss I made for a fellow.  The letters are indented rather than raised in relief down in a cartouche.  Although it is a mystery to me how you can use enough force to stamp in relief on an iron or steel barrel without deforming the bore...or using a mandrel in the bore for the stamping.

It's hard enough to do it in 24 karat gold......

Dave,
Very nice work on the little 'pearls' at the breech.  Lovely job.
