Most of you probably know of the Gobrecht family and gunsmiths of York County.  I found that Samuel Gobrecht (b. 1780 who worked at one time with Frederick Sell) was actually the brother of Christian Gobrecht (b. 1785), who became the chief engraver of the US mint in 1840.  Most of the US coin designs of the mid 1800's, such as the various liberty coin designs, were Christian Gobrecht designs as it appears he started working for the mint as early as 1823.  Christian apparently apprenticed to a clockmaker for a time in Manheim, Lancaster County also.  I wonder if he apprenticed to someone like George Schroyer also as a young man?  I have seen some engravings on Schroyers and Sells that look superior to others and could be by someone like Gobrecht.  If you google Christian Gobrecht there is plenty online about him.  Anyway thought this was interesting.
