New Augusta/Rockbridge VA Rifle
« on: March 12, 2018, 03:37:24 AM »
This is my latest rifle.   I made it for my brother.   It is my third version of an 1775-1785 Augusta/Rockbridge Virginia rifle.    Let me know what you think.

Looks to be a great job on a fine rifle.  I'd be proud to own it and shoot it.  I appreciate the fine carving.  I am sure it is correct, but that lovely "in-the-white" finish scares me regarding upkeep.  Thank you for sharing Mark.   God Bless,   Marc

Marc,  the barrel and lock will oxidize over time just as the originals did.    I don't expect anyone to try to keep it like that.    Most people would want it aged, but I wanted finished as new.

That's a fine rifle, Mark. Well done.  More practice engraving, but quite suitable and close to many originals.
I am not familiar with the rifle you built to.  I really like your craving, fit and finish.
Nice!

Very nice Mark! True to the spirit of the original...have you sent photos to Wallace? I am sure he would be very interested in seeing them.

The barrel is a Rice, Dickert profile, 44", C-54.  The balance point is right behind the rear sight.

I have taken lots of photos for other people's books and magazines.  That is the only way there is any money in it.   The photos you see are what you get in my standard $99 long gun package.    Space in a book is too precious for someone to use all the photos.    I have suggested that the authors include a CD/DVD with ALL the photos, but knowledgeable publishers tell me that the CD/DVD idea doesn't sell.

I take photos at my home in Mechanicsville,VA and at the Virginia-Kentucky Rifle Show in Front Royal, VA.    If anybody has the space for me to setup at your show,  I will certainly entertain the idea.

After purchasing some of the KRA DVD's I'm addicted to them. The detail is far better than what you can find in a book. I really dislike not having a book in hand, but making the sacrifice of having to view the screen is worth it in my opinion. I'd love someone to have made a high quality DVD of the collection Chambers is selling off at the moment.
