Got barrel?
« on: March 14, 2018, 05:56:12 PM »
A friend just sent me these photos ... 75-cal Hudson Valley fowler, 60” barrel

All of my muzzleloaders will shoot into one ragged hole ALL DAY LONG ... it's just the 2nd or 3rd & other shots that tend to open up my groups ... !

That's a great piece. I have a New England fowler with a 72" barrel. Fun to shoot, Stand in one county to load with the butt in the next county.

Seems to be more of a Buck an ear with that buttstock shape.
Here's a 72" barreled example with a handsome gent propping it up.

Interesting guns.  Never see those here in the West.

The second picture is kinda unique in that it catches the pan flash but the main charge has not yet ignited.

Thats a long barrel for certain. I dont see a handsome gent propping it up although it does resemble a guy in Iowa that built me a gun a while back ???

That's a long one for sure. And when your not shooting it you could rent it out to some house painter so he could put his pain t roller in the muzzle for those hard to reach spots.

Mine weighs 11 lbs. 1 3/8" breech and 11 bore. Serious wild fowler.

Actually the main charge has lit off. It just takes a couple of minutes for the shot to reach the muzzle. Requires a steady hold....

Here’s another sequence of stills taken from a video. Very interesting that the pan ‘fire’ is orange when the flint sparks ignite the priming charge, then turns white as the main charge ignites, then is just a bigger cloud of white smoke as the charge exits the muzzle.

This is all from iPhone video, so I’m sure the film speed missed some details.

Hi,
It must take a lot of powder to get the ball out of that barrel?? :o
With a light charge, I can just hear the ball rattling down the bore. ;)
Best regards!
Fred

There is a jet of gas that comes out the vent when the main charge lights off. Could be causing the color change.

They ain't for shootin' ball, they are for shootin' large amounts of shot, 2oz+ loads.

About or around an equal measure to the shot.

In  jug or normal choked 12 bore, I used 3 dram measure, which is 82gr. That powder measure holds just a tich (1 or 2 pellets) over 1 1/8oz.lead shot. That is a typical load, in my opinion for a 12, for upland birds.

If I was using a cylinder bored 12 bore gun for turkey, I'd be inclined to use something like a 100gr. powder measure which holds 1 3/8oz shot.

A 110gr. measure holds 1 1/2oz shot.

A 120gr. measure holds 1 5/8oz. shot.

Commercial stricken powder measures, adjustable or not, may or likely may not throw these powder charges. You need to weight them.  Lee Valley Tools sells a pocket-size electronic scale for $20.00.
