Being unable to get a simple part from the USA says little for the
American suppliers. I have milled a number of these in years long
gone when helping Bill Large.
I have never seen a clean out screw on an antique but on upper
end English guns they have been found by using X ray. On the
Alex Henry breech of Don Brown's antique it was plain to see and
they were drilled all the way across and below the center line of the bore'
It appeared that the screw was probably peened,filed,polished and then
engraved with the rest of the breech. The so called "blow out plug"
was a thin platinum disc over another screw in the bolster.
These breech plugs were designed so little pressure was on the
nipple base and the platinum was only decorative.
Runar's clever system to bypass the problem proves the idea that
the fewer outside suppliers involved with such a project is better.
