What weight, smooth, or rough, oil tanned, or vegetable tanned, come on you have to give us some more info. I have had good luck getting some kinds of leather from Moscow hide, and fur. But, they don’t seem to have vegetable tanned heavy carving leather.

What will you be making?  We often associate buff leather as having the color white (military white buff straps and belts) but buff leather is a thick, supple oil tanned leather with the hair (smooth) side removed.  It is tan or light yellow/brown in color that can be whitened with pipe clay or black dye if desired.

I need to make slings and bags for my Ferguson, Hall, 1792 Contract Rifle, and 1817 Contract Rifle. I may be incorrectly calling out what I want. moodyholler

For the Ferguson sling, white buff will be correct.  For the US rifles, use standard bark tan leather, in brown, flesh side out.

Bags for the US rifles can be made of bark tan in black or brown, depending on what the regulations called for to make the correct patterns - lots of research required but you will be able to find examples with work.  Keep in mind that the various states - most rifle troops using these rifles were state rather than Federal - called for different patterns and the US government were also different.

Roy Najecki sells excellent buff leather straps. I believe he even sells complete slings. He only sells 18th century correct material. Expensive. But HC.
