latest build
« on: May 22, 2009, 07:07:42 PM »
Hello to all, it has been a while since I have been on the board due to work and no internet access. I got me a new lap top and wireless so I can visit more. Hope all has been well on the board. This is pic's of my latest build. I have done more engraving on this rifle than any other. I have been working on improving my engraving, still have a ways to go but I am slowly sneaking up on it. I hope that ya'll enjoy it and any comments will be appreciated.

Really nicely done all around, architecture, wire inlay and engraving.  Very cool.  Bet you've got some hours in this one!

Jim,

Truly Beautiful!  I am a fan of wire inlay and lots of engraving.  The darkness of the wood brings out the metal beautifully.  Thank you for sharing a work of art.

I remember you from the old board in the early days Bama, welcome back.  I was awol for a good while myself and have never really got back into the swing of it.  Snot like it was, but still much to learn.

Anyway, sweet gun.  Just my stock style too!

Great job! Very tastefully done. A very good example of how to show off your skills with out creating an overblown fantasy gun.

Jim, your rifle has good sound architecture - very pleasing lines.  And your engraving is comfortable and relaxed and at least as good as most of the originals I've viewed - a lot better than some.  I like what you've done.  Stick around.  We'll want to see more.

I like the effort you put into the engraving border work. That's the best part for me.

Bama,
Good to see you back.
I like the patchbox a lot.  A little John Davidson feel to it and I like the expose return on the hinge on the finial
Lots of other details are great, but those were my initial impressions.

Bama....very innovative, wish I could engrave just half that good, also, I have never fooled with wire inlay.  I think we might have some perople on this forum, perhaps Mike Brooks, who might be able to re-convert that lock for you.   You
surely realized that someone would pick on you for building a nice Kentucky "percussion" gun.........Don

Don, you know, I never even noticed the gun was perc, I was so into the engraving and wire inlay.

Thanks to all for making me feel welcomed, it feels good to be back with those afflicted with the dreaded rifle building sickness.

I knew the cap buster was going to get me in trouble .
Ben & Don you just have to close your eyes and pretend its a flinter. I wanted it to be a flinter so bad but as you know the customer is always right and he wanted a cap gun.

I am really looking forward to seeing everyone at Bowling Green. I have been working in Baton Rouge for the last 2 years, not much shooting or rifle building going on around those parts.
So it will be good to see lots of people making chips.

To inlet the wire in the barrel I first cut the channel with a hacksaw, I know a real engraver would have used a flat to cut the channel but believe it or not I am more comfortable with the hacksaw, I did undercut the channel groove. I cut the groove about 3/32 deep used annealed 1/16 brass wire that I flattened just a bit to get it into the grove then tamped the wire into the groove, filed and sanded it flush. I don't know if this is the formal way to do it but it seems to have worked out.

Thanks to you all for the great comments, again I will say it feels good to be back. I have managed to look back over the board some and all I can say is there are many here that I admire and have been an inspiration to me.

Why not?  Seriously, my first thought was "Beautiful rifle, but why is it a caplock?"

Nice work, Bama!
