Folks who do jug choking
« on: April 26, 2018, 01:20:22 PM »
A friend would like to get a 20 ga. barrel jug choked,  Caywood says that he will not jug choke a barrel with a vent liner.  Can you give me some contact info. for other venders who will do this work.
Thanks Ron

Lowell Tennyson in Iowa did mine years ago.  Don't know if he still is doing it.

Caywood did two for me that have vent liners but I can't remember if I had installed them before I sent him the barrels, probably not because I don't think I had the underlugs on when I sent the barrels.

He does have this thing about vet liners..........

Use a Lewis lead remover and sand paper.

Use a Lewis lead remover and sand paper.
Unfortunately, it's not that easy.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

It was for me.  I must have gotten lucky.  I was only looking or a little choke, not full choke performance. Just enough to even out the patterns.

I must have gotten lucky. I sent mine to Caywood...it was completely finished with vent liner, tennons, sights, browned...breeched. came back jugged.

Ron,

Both myself and Todd have had guns jug choked by Caywood.
Todd just got your 16ga back from him and it's throwing terrific turkey killing patterns now!....both guns obviously had vent liners in them.

Thanks Matt.  Todd is coming up to the shop on the 7th. so I will talk to him about it.  Charlie one of the guys who works in the shop wants to get a couple of 20 ga. barrels done, but the vent liner thing stopped us.  I guess white lightening liners are ok.   I will have Charlie call Mr. Caywood and see what the story is.

Mr. Tennyson does a great job. He jug choked a 12 bore for me and I get great patterns. I would not hesitate to shoot a turkey at 45 yards as I know the patterns have great density. Took two long beards this year with my New England fowling piece with the jug choked barrel. I love it. Mr. Tennyson is a real nice man too.
