Binding Trigger
« on: May 23, 2009, 12:00:57 AM »
Okay, I didn't want to bother any body about this problem, but it turns out I'm really baffled. I'm using a simple trigger pinned to a trigger plate. The pivot pin is .600"  high from the trigger plate face. The trigger plate is 3 1/4" long and 7/16" wide with a rear screw 1/4" from the rear of the trigger plate. The tang bolt is .575" from the front of the plate. The pivot pin is 1.225" from the front of the trigger plate. I just wanted you guys to get a picture of the trigger plate. The problem is this: The trigger works fine when placed in the inlet. It works fine when the rear screw is screwed in and tightened. When you install the tang bolt, the trigger binds. As soon as you start the threads in the trigger plate, just a few threads, the trigger binds. If looked at this six ways to Sunday, and for the life of me, can't figure it out. If re-tapped the tang bolt hole in the trigger plate, Checked all the clearances, and nothing, but as soon as I start the tang bolt it binds, even without tightening it, just starting a few threads. I will add this, with the trigger pinned this high, the whole trigger  moves to the rear and up, but like I said, it works fine until I start the tang bolt. Any body offer any suggestions will be GREATLY appreciated.   ...Geo.

is the tang bolt tipping the plate so that the top of the trigger is rubbing on the inside of the stock at the top. that is the only thing i could come up with

George, You stated that the trigger binds.  Can I assume by this statement that the trigger has full movement but it is just tight?  I am trying to understand if the trigger moves but it is tight like it is rubbing up against something or is the trigger locked up hard like it is up against the wood?

The tang bolt does ever so slightly tip the trigger plate, but the trigger has very little travel to trip the sear. It has a real nice lite release. Also the jerk that built this (ME), didn't resolve this problem BEFORE he went ahead and finished it.   UPDATE... If I told you how little wood, I removed it with a file where the trigger tipped up to trip the sear, it was binding on the side. My thanks to ACER , who I confided in, and told me to blacken everything. But it working, until I started that tang bolt is what threw me. There seemed to be ample clearance for a 1/16" trigger, Guess I was wrong! Thanks to others who offered help.  It is working fine now ...Geo.
