Finished Rifle
« on: May 09, 2018, 01:44:19 AM »
Hello there...  Here is a rifle I recently finished that I thought I would share.  This started as our Colonial Kit.  Any questions just ask!  Oh, click on the images to see a larger better quality image if you would like.

Thanks,
Jim

Jim, That is a beautiful piece of work in every aspect. My question is; Can the equipment that you currently use replicate all phases of the build including that wonderful relief and incise carving? If it cannot surely the technology won’t be far behind. Great job! You have done your homework.
Kindest regards.

WOW! The thing that I like about the Colonial Kit over the SMR Kit is that tasteful embellishment, engraving, and carving seems much more at home here, giving you the perfect canvas on which to indulge your creativity.  There is so much of Jim's style evident in this piece that you'd never know it was a Kit gun. Great Job Jim!

Wow. That's a beauty. Clean, good flow, and enough going on but not overdone. I like the antique brass look.

That's a beauty for sure. I was kind of waiting to see some completed kits before I started in on mine. I got mine about 1-1/2 weeks ago and was very pleased with the quality of the kit. I had seen a SMR kit come out of the box once before and knew what to expect, but it's still amazing to open the box and witness the quality.

I like everything about that gun, I hope mine turns out even a fraction as nice as that.

Thanks a lot guys.  As far as the wood grade of this stock goes,  it would probably be our standard base price wood.

All the best,
Jim

Really tasty rifle Jim.  Wouldn't it have been nice if more of the builders from the 18th C could carve like that?

I don't think the equipment I use could replicate carving like this.  There are lots of differences between carving edged tools and rotary cutters.  You could approximate the look, but that would be all.  More axis on the machine would help as would a very high rpm spindle.  Mine currently has a max of 24k.  Then there is the problem of grain, tear-out etc.   Not saying it can't be done, but I don't see as something that is practical.
