One ugly old gun

So I came across this for sale by Rock Island auction company. It is listed as an antique. It looks pretty ugly, and pretty chunky. The architecture seems all wrong to me.  Do you guys think this is an actual antique, or something somebody tried to make more recently?

Odd proportions for sure. Could be just old and ugly.

       Try acquainting yourself with a German Stutz.  A kind of short Jaeger that was used on horseback or in very thick cover to hunt wild boar...

Looks fine to me. Just because an original piece has awkward architecture or whatever doesn't mean it's not original. Modern builders and customers look for perfection in every detail. The original builders did not at all times.

That backward lock and sight base are designed (I assume) to blow cap fragments
and other rubbish into the shooters right eye.Way to go ;D

Strange answer from you Bob  something I would have expected from a novice , the gun is the art of German target shooters of the period.

It looks to me as if the lock has a shield (set at a 45 degree angle) to deflect possible cap fragments away from the shooter's eye.
I imagine it works pretty well.
