New build
« on: May 10, 2018, 05:05:04 PM »

Well, here we go again.  The J. Welshans shown in the KRA York County CD is the inspiration for this rifle. It will have a 45 cal. Green Mountain 42" barrel, a Chamber's lock, and I hope to closely match the patina of the original.  It will be a slim and light gun, and that is what I am trying to achieve.  My 47 1/4 in barrel 50 cal. Sell is long, fairly heavy and somewhat less maneuverable. I acknowledge that with age comes the desire to lighten the load.  Thanks to all of you who have contributed to my knowledge base on this site.

Nate  I'm sure you've heard "I cut it off twice and it was still too short".  I don't think it will happen with this gun width wise!   That blank was an honest 3" thick.  I was searching for the right curl to match the original and this blank had it.

Taylor - Center lines already on.  Heck, I drew the entire profile top, bottom, and cheekpiece!

Something fun to do is weigh your blank at the beginning of the build, and then again at the end.  Collect all your shavings and see how close you come to capturing them all.

Wood shavings and dust are dandy for anti-slip on icy sidewalks, and easier on your floors than sand and salt when you track it in the house.

It looks a bit more like a longrifle now.  That was a whole lot of wood to pare down!

Fantastic work - that is going to be an impressive LR when done.
I am not familiar with your model, can you help out?

Really nice work.

This is my first round of drawing for the carving.  It will sit overnight and I will look at it again in the morning.  I already see some tidying up that needs done.  Photos help to pick out things you don't see while working on things.  Progress!

Hi Barry,

Overall I like your designs, but I think a few tweeks will improve them.

I think the wrist pattern on the lock side looks pretty good.  You might want to tweek the downward facing C-scroll.  The middle and right side look a little off.  Maybe thin the middle a little and/or add a small fern tendril?

On the pattern forward of the cheek piece, I think the rear volute needs to be better related to the arc of the front of the cheek piece.  The carving needs to flow out of the cheek piece.

In the pattern behind the cheek piece, the c-scrolls, lines and volutes need to be smoothed.  Gary Brumfield told me some things that helped my carving.  Fern tendrils, scrolls, etc. should gradually increase in width, not get wider then narrower.  Volutes should gradually get tighter, or gradually open up, but should not both, it results in "elbows".  Study the scrolls and tendrils on the back of a one dollar bill.

This is gonna be one fine gun.

-Ron

Ky-Flinter   Thanks for the observations. I corrected most of the things you pointed out.  Check out the photo of the original.  The volute and it's position relative to the cheekpiece are actually a bit different.

I'm with you Barry.  Your design is looking good!

Describing carving with only the type written word is tough and I obviously had a hard time describing what I meant with the volute forward of the cheek piece.  Notice in the pic of the original, the forward edge of the cheek piece arcs up to form a line that flows all the way to the nose of the comb, and the carving snugs right up to that line, so that the line coming off the cheek piece becomes a feature of the carving design that is in harmony with the rest of the design.

In your original drawing the arc of the front of the cheek piece seemed to intersect the volute rather than flow into it.  Your latest drawing looks much better.

Come back and take a look at it tomorrow, you may find things you missed or want to change.  Also, hold the stock in front of a mirror.  This view gives a whole different perspective.

I still say this is gonna be one fine gun.

I didn't want anyone to think I gave up.  Not 100% done yet but getting close.  When I started this gun I thought that the carving was simple but tasteful and attractive.  It was rather intricate though.  I made a bit of a booboo on the wrist carving, but after looking closely at the original I leaned one way, Welshans leaned the other.  I guess we both did that on a Friday afternoon!

Looking good Sir. I like the way you have your vise set up.
What do you use to pad the vise with?
