I finally finished this gun... It has a Colerain 44" .54 cal rifled octagon to round barrel, Chambers lock, Davis triggers. I got the idea for the patch box from one illustrated in John Schippers engraving book, page 67... (I still have to learn to engrave). The original was mounted on a flintlock swivel breech and it's just about final size in the book. Also, in that book are three or four rifles with the patchbox release cut into the edge of the door. I used that for this build although I'm not sure how traditional it is since I've never seen it used anywhere other than this book. The stock profile was Northampton, although I guess you would call this gun "contemporary".

I'm not very wordy when it comes to computers so I'm sorry to say I don't contribute much to the discussions here... but I'm on this site alot. And I'd like to thank everyone for all the information I've ever received. I think this website is just as important for the continuation of this art as any book or magazine available.

A few years ago I mixed up some homemade walnut stain with a little maple stain. I applied it to the stock, cut it back with a wipe of acetone and then applied LMF Lancaster Maple. Used LMF sealer and finish.

I love your "contemporary" rifle. I am not up on Lehigh traits but that's what I think of when I see your rifle. I have no idea if that's correct or not but I sure like the style/color and you work looks great.

Love the color.
I’m with Dennis on the overall architecture.
As I scrolled through the pics “Lehigh” definitely came to mind. Perhaps someone better educated on that school will chime in. Doesn’t matter either way... real nice rifle. The full length pictures really show it off in balance and do it the most justice.
BTW: I noticed your screen name. Not trying to pry, or be presumptuous but it brought Garry Owen to mind.

Thanks all for the replies. I shot it today and, at 25 yards it was dead on... Since the front part of the barrel is round, I worried that the front sight placement may not be centered. But it shot well and points really nice. In the next couple of weeks I'll be taking it to a range where I'll be able to shoot it out to 50 and 100 yards.

Really top workmanship, Quanloi.

And very clearly of Lancaster origins - as soon as I saw that rifle butt, thought of this 1793 Rupp that I just started on.

You detailing so many steps in the process is going to help me, and many others also.

The tricky part about building these Philadelphia / Bethlehem school guns is making them so they are not cheek slappers. YOu never really know the answer to that question until it's done, and you have it at the range. What sort of loads are you using, and is it one?
