Grrw Indian trade riflle
« on: May 14, 2018, 03:47:05 AM »
Picked up a grrw blue jacket sanders built trade rifle .54 cal .No 6 it is quite a find in my opinion it was built in 1974 for the fella whose name was engraved on top of the barrel. All the engraving was done at the factory as ordered. The guy I bought it from was selling it for the nephew of the original owner. I'll see if I can post pics.

Started by a Navy inspector and it showed up in places said to be impossible to reach.
I used to draw it and another absurdity on test papers in high school.

1x30
1x30 7 lands and grooves so that makes it a grrw plum center barrel. Side note a very dirty barrel I might add no rust just a huge accumulation of lead in those deep squared off grooves ive been scrubbing for two days and the patches are still coming out cruddy ! Actually it's fouling not lead.

Yes that's quite a find , IMO. Phil Sanders, Bluejacket, was a friend of mine. Back when he lived in Paris, Illinois. Very talented man. Got me started shooting black powder.

Blue was multi-talented man that seemed to be able to do anything he set out to do. Gun building, knife & hawk making to pin striping our motorcycles.

Phil was a talented person.Got to know him when living in east central Illinois, through a mutual friend Lloyd Gammon ,a gun smith in Champaign Illinois.Lloyd got me started going to Friendship in 1973 ,setting up with he and George Handcock across from Jack Lewis in the Sheep Shed. Most all of that bunch are now gone, they were all older than me and I'm 80..All  R.I.P.

Sounds like he was a well liked and very talented individual from what everyone is saying about him, he sure could build a nice rifle though I can't wait to get to the range with this gun and give it work up. If I get the lock sear spring fixed before my next club shoot I'll use it for the next match.

Well after 3-4 days of scrubbing the barrel is 98 % clean I think I sent thru about 200 patches and three bronze brushes and lots of elbow grease I can't believe how much fouling can accumulate!

If this gun was as dirty as you say, I would either check the condition of the drum threads, or have a knowledgeable gunsmith do so. I was a contestant in a long gong shoot at a Rendezvous in Northern California, about thirty five years ago, when another contestant shooting a GRRW trade rifle blew the drum out of it. It wrecked the lock, and narrowly missed a spectator several yards away. This gun was nearly new, but the piece of drum thread left in the barrel indicated the thread had been cracked for some time. Maybe from over torquing when it was built. Better safe than sorry.

Thank you I have gone thru the entire gun and don't believe there is any safety concerns. I don't think the original owner left the gun that dirty I think it was the nephew who didn't know how to properly clean one it's just a miracle there was no rust ! It's strange that I took one of my guns with a perfectly clean and shiny bore and used a bronze brush in it the patches came out very dirty ! So I'm changing the way I clean my smoke poles from here on.

Nice looking rifle. Love the Kilroy cartoon! WW2 GIs left Kilroy all over Europe and Italy.

Pretty good so far I'm still playing with the loads I shot steel last Sunday. The front sight pretty low for me but I hit all turkeys at 75 yards which is a tough one to do with any rifle let alone one you never shot only hit two rams at 100 kept shooting high about 1-2" above the backs but all in all I came in second place that day I will keep playing with different loads. Not sure but I might replace the front sight blade not the base but will shoot a while to see if I get use to her. Fyi I was shooting 40-50 grains swiss 2f next time I'll drop down to 30 grains at 25-40 yards for chickens and pigs .
