French Type "C" fusil?
« on: May 14, 2018, 05:00:52 PM »
I am having a hard time finding pics of original type C fusil fins as used in the old Northwest. I have been asked to build one. The only pics I have found are from 3 different kit guns offered. I found an old thread about them that discussed many of the parts offered for the kits were incorrect....but no info on what is actually correct.
Pictures anyone ???
Maybe this should be in the antique gun collecting section.

Thanks, Tom C

The Museum of the Fur Trade in Chadron has published a zillion quarterlies over the years.  Several have articles on said gun.  You might call them and request listing of said quarterlies and purchase them.  They have them all in reprint.

And drawing of stock profiles.  No complete guns though.

You need to buy "THE FRENCH TRADE GUN IN  NORTH AMERICA" by Kevin Gladysz. I bought my copy from TOTW. This is the best resource I know of on the subject.

Mike, Track doesn't appear to carry the "French T G in N America" anymore, even though it is in there catalog. I looked online last week.
I didn't know if the "Colonial Frontier Guns" would be worth buying or not.

I may check up at Fort Michilimackinac for info.

I contacted the museum at Chadron today....waiting for reply.

What about the book "Fusil de Tulle in New France" 1691-1741 by R. Bouchard? It is the same time period.

I have it. All it covers are hunting guns or "Tulle fusil de chasse" which the "Type C" ain't.

I’ll be working in the Mackinaw City area all next week and I’d be happy to stop in the shop at the Fort Michilimackinac if that is helpful. I bought a copy of “Guns of the Early Frontiers” there last year, but it isn’t very helpful. I don’t recall any other books on firearms. They do have a few Fusils on display in the fort, along with several Northwest Trade guns and of course several Brown Bess.

Holy Cow!  I think they are selling a gun and not a book at that price Tom! ;D ;D

I just mention this because I bought my copy of Hamilton's book at the Fort store in Mackinaw City a few years ago.

I completely agree with Mike on this book. This is the #1 book on the market right now on early French guns here in North America. A second book with more and better color images with better details would be great but this is there book as of now.

Still looking for the "French Trade Gun in N. America". Does any one have one for sale at it's normal price ($35-$50) or to loan out for a while?

The Hamilton book mainly dealt with dug/ archeological pieces, some taken out of context.
It's not bad for what it is but it's dated.
The Gladysz book takes period records, manifests, and trade lists and aligns them in the proper context with existing pieces.
I've got two copies, the one in the shop is pretty much a loose leaf document.
You may want to check with some libraries. It may be available.

Kevin is a personal friend of mine. He put countless hours of labor into researching it. The amount of material that didn't make it into the book is staggering

I think "The French Trade Gun in North America" originally sold for about $36.xx new, but is now out of print.  Great book.  I realized too late that I wanted the book.  I found some outrageous prices online.   I called Mowbray Publishers, Inc. (original publisher) who had a few new copies left.  I paid about $100.  Guess it depends how bad you want it.

Back when Rifles of Colonial America was out of print, and there was "no way" that Shumway, then in bad health, was ever going to print another edition, I searched and searched, and finally found a single Volume II, for which I paid $250.  Later, I finally found I and II, and paid $500 for them, and then sold the one single extra volume.  Simply put, I HAD to have them.  It was less than a year later, I think, that suddenly, a new edition was being published for 60 bucks a copy... oh well.  Normally, though, it's a one shot deal.  If a book like this ever does get published (do you know how many books I have waited for, that I was told would be out any day now???), it is not likely at all that it will get a second run.  Buy them while you can.  Once they're out of print, they can be VERY hard to find at any price.
